The Bloomfield boys' tennis team pick up a pair of close wins Saturday by taking the Loogootee Invitational Tournament.

In the first match, the Cards knocked off Wood Memorial 3-2 by getting easy wins from No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Joel Oliphant breezed past Derrick Reed 6-0, 6-1 and Holden Hamm and Austin Schulte beat Tre Wilkins and A. J. Steiner 6-3, 6-1. The winning point came from No. 2 singles Willy Scott when he outlasted Brandon Memmer 6-7(5), 6-1, 1-0(7).

Derek Corn lost at the top spot to Daniel Hall 6-1, 6-2. Hall, a junior, has been beaten only once in his high school career and that was at last year's state tournament. Bloomfield's other loss was at the No. 2 doubles spot where Jacob Chestnut and Mitch Hobson lost a heartbreaker to Kyle McConnell and Heath Kohlmeier 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10).

The championship match against Tecumseh was even closer. The easy wins again came at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Oliphant took out Jacob Kellner 6-3, 6-1 while Hamm and Schulte handed Lucas Kost and Preston Hopper an identical 6-3, 6-1 loss. This time it was Corn's turn to bring home a dramatic 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(9) win over Adam Westerman. Corn was down 4-7 in the super tiebreak. He put together four straight points to take an 8-7 lead and held on for a 11-9 final score.

Bloomfield's losses came at No. 2 singles where Scott lost to Kreig Oxley 6-3, 7-6(5) and the No. 2 duo Chestnut and Hobson were beaten by Kyle Fischer and Jordan Lamborn 6-2, 6-4.

This was a tough week for us. Six matches in six days and we came out of it 5-1. This coming week will be easier with just two matches but we travel to Northeast Dubois on Tuesday on the longest road trip of the season. The 4:30 p.m. scheduled match should provide us with another challenge.
