Prep football season reaches week five

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

As the high school football season in Indiana reaches week five, two area teams will try to remain undefeated while the other looks for its first win.

Springs Valley (0-4) at Linton-Stockton (4-0) -- The Miners, ranked No. 5 in Class A, and Blackhawks are both members of Sectional 40, but are teams heading in two different directions.

Linton-Stockton has outscored its opponents by an average of almost 29 points per game in cruising to another undefeated start.

Springs Valley, guided by fifth-year coach Mark Hammond, have started the season winless. The Blackhawks, 17-29 during Hammond's tenure, will enter the game with a 10-game losing streak, including a 28-21 loss to the Miners at French Lick a year ago and a 22-6 setback at Linton-Stockton in the opening round of the sectional last year.

Conversely, the Miners have won 19 straight regular-season contests.

Springs Valley has managed to score just three touchdowns all season. They lost to Brown County 49-14, Crawford County 22-0, Paoli 42-0 and Mitchell 21-8 a week ago.

"We just have to stay focused and get ready for Springs Valley," said running back Mickey Tosti, who caught two TD passes in a 14-0 victory over West Vigo a week ago. "We just have to continue to keep working hard and trying to improve each week.

"We still have a long way to go and there is a lot of room to get better."

The Miners used those two TD passes from quarterback Keith Cunningham to Tosti to account for all the offense in the victory last week over the Class 3A Vikings, who came into that game undefeated. Tosti now has six touchdowns, including three rushing. The six scores ties Evan Magni for the team lead.

Cunningham has now passed for nine touchdowns and almost 600 yards.

Miner coach Steve Weber said he was not happy with their pass protection last week.

"It was not all the fault of the line," said Weber. "But we have to do a better job of giving Keith time to throw the ball.

"I realize a lot of that could have been because we were playing a 3A team. They were very physical. We know we have a lot of things that need work. We are trying to get better each week."

He added that the defense was very good again as the Miners have posted back-to-back shutouts. On the season, they have allowed just three TDs and 24 total points, six per game.

Kyle Smith was among the leaders in tackles against WV with eight. Jacob Tibbett, Jordan Tharp, Kaleb Bridges and Magni each had a tackle for loss. Tibbett also had an interception.

"Our defense bailed us out," Weber said of last week's victory.

This will be the 13th meeting between the Blackhawks and the Miners. Linton-Stockton has won the last five games.

The series, which started in 1986 with a 19-0 Miner win in the sectional, was exclusively a post-season affair from 1986 until 2003. This will be the fourth year in a row they have met in the regular season.

Kickoff at Roy Williams Field is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

North Daviess (3-1, 2-0) at Union (Dugger) (4-0, 1-0) -- Coming into the season Union (Dugger) football coach Todd Gambill knew that he had a talented team. Undefeated through the first four weeks is something the veteran coach knew was a possibility. Now with confidence as high as the sky above them, the Bulldogs will look for their best start to a season under Gambill's tenure when they play host to Southwest Seven Conference foe North Daviess Friday night.

"With each passing week, the kids confidence has continued to grow," Gambill said. "They believe in themselves and know that they have the opportunity to win each game they play."

Defense has been the key to the Bulldogs success in the early going, giving up only 29 points through the first four games. Even more impressive is their second half defense, not surrendering any points in eight quarters they have played in the second half.

The Bulldogs will look to avenge a 28-6 set back against the Cougars last season. North Daviess leads the overall series, 33-11 including 18 straight wins from 1991-2004. But the Bulldogs have won 2 of 3.

Leading the defense on the year is Dustin Howard. The junior has recorded a team high 29 tackles on the season and also leads the team with four sacks to go along with one fumble recovery.

George Secrest ranks second on the team with 24 total tackles, while Blane Boyd has recorded 23 tackles and one interception. Gerran Wilkes comes in with 19 stops and is tied with Howard by dropping the opposing quarterback behind the line of scrimmage four times.

After racking up over 400 yards on the ground in their week 1 48-8 shellacking over North Central, the run game as been dormant for the better part of the last three weeks for the Bulldogs. Gambill knows against the upper echelon teams such as North Daviess his offense will need to be more than just one dimensional.

"Hopefully the success that we have had on defense will carry over to our offense," Gambill said. "We need to be more balanced this week and can't not rely on just one part of our offense. We are going to have to be able to mix in the run with the pass."

Gambill mentioned that after the first week, teams have been crowding the line to try and take away the Bulldogs running game. Bulldog signal caller B.J. Howard made the defense of Monrovia pay last week as the senior threw for a season high of 169 yards and two scores.

"I think that North Daviess will have to prepare for both our running game and passing game this week, since B.J. had a nice game last week," Gambill said. "Hopefully with another successful passing game it will open back up the ground game for us."

Logan Chesterfield pass Howard's main target, as the senior hauled in six passes for 135 yards and two scores. Coming into the game, Chesterfield only had three receptions for a meager 33 yards.

"We obviously had more throwing opportunities last week," Gambill said of Chesterfield. "But it was nice to see Logan have a nice game, he did what a senior does and found some openings in their defense."

Blane Boyd is tied with Chesterfield for the team lead in receptions on the year, with nine. Boyd is second on the team with 154 yards receiving as well.

North Daviess, enters the contest with three consecutive wins after dropping their season open to Class A No. 8 Tecumseh, 12-7.

Union (Dugger) is 12th in the latest Class A poll.

Kickoff at Dugger is set for 7 p.m. Friday.

Eastern Greene (0-4, 0-3) at Wood Memorial (1-3, 0-2) -- The Eastern Greene Thunderbirds will once again look for their first win of the season when they travel to Wood Memorial.

The Trojans have faced a similar tough schedule as the Thunderbirds have through the first four weeks. After slipping by a woeful Princeton team in week 1, Wood Memorial has been outscored 111-8 in three consecutive losses to Class A powers, Tecumseh, Linton-Stockton and North Knox.

Last season the Trojans scored a season-high 42 points in their win over the Thunderbirds. Eastern Greene coach Luke Dean knows that his squad will once again be in for a battle.

"Looking at the schedule, we thought last year's game was one that we could pick off a win," Dean said as he served as an assistant during last season's 42-20 loss to the Trojans. "So we know that we will have our hands full again this season. They have played just as tough a schedule as we have."

The Thunderbirds are looking to put last weeks 51-14 loss to first- year program Forest Park aside and live up to their coaches expectations.

"We all know that the kids are better than what they have played up to this point," Dean said. "We just have to prepare and move on."

He also mentioned that his team has been shooting themselves in the foot a lot this season.

"We just have to limit our mistakes," he added. "We need to fix our own problems before we worry about what someone else is going to do."

One of the highlights from a disappointing loss last week was tailback Miguel Olvera. The senior counted for both of the T-Birds scores including a 65-yard punt return in the third quarter.

"Miguel has been solid all season," Dean said of his senior leader. "We just need to step up other areas of our game, and limit our mistakes."

Dean mentioned that although the team has not tasted victory yet this season, his squad has not thrown in the towel.

"The kids are playing hard, you can't take anything away from them, the effort is there," the first year head coach said. "One problem we have is lack of numbers, its hard to have the majority of kids playing both ways while other teams have the luxury of multiple substitutions and fresh legs. But I am proud of the way we have battled."

This will be the fourth meeting in the series since both teams became members of the Southwest Seven Conference. Eastern Greene won 34-14 in 2005, but lost 11-0 at Wood Memorial in 2006.

Kick-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Oakland City.
