ELNORA -- After two full days of tennis, the boys Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship came down to the No. 2 singles players from two undefeated teams fighting it out. Unfortunately for Bloomfield, North Daviess' Logan Wagler, riding on a big serve and bigger passing shots, defeated Bloomfield's Willy Scott 6-3, 6-0 to give North Daviess the SWIAC team championship on the Tony Steele Courts here Saturday.

The host Cougars finished with 19 points. The Cardinals had 12.5. Linton-Stockton was third with two and White River Valley did not score as the Wolverines did not pick up a victory in a tournament.

Wagler's performance for the two days was nearly flawless. He single-handedly took out Bloomfield's singles troupe.

In the first round, Wagler defeated No. 3 Joel Oliphant, 7-5, 6-2, Then in the semifinals he took out No. 1 Derek Corn 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (4).

Wagler did take a break from the Cardinals in the second round to defeat WRV's No. 1 Evan Karr, 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles championship was decided when North Daviess' No. 1 team of Thomas Nugent and Blake Burkhart beat Bloomfield's Holden Hamm and Austin Schulte 7-5, 6-1.

The Cougar duo also put out Bloomfield's Jacob Chestnut and Mitch Hobson 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. Chestnut and Hobson reached the finals by defeating the WRV team of Austin Roudebush and Garrett Miller 6-0, 6-0.

Hamm and Schulte earned victories over North Daviess' Austin Lengacher and Tyler McDonald 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and Linton's No. 1 team of Chase Rhoten and Merrick McBride 6-2, 6-2.

This was a tough loss for us. Winning the SWIAC is always one of our goals.

We knew going into the match that North Daviess would be tough. They came out and competed hard the whole tournament. They are in our sectional and we're going to have to work harder the next couple of weeks to make a run at the sectional title.

Linton-Stockton came up with two victories during the tournament. No. 2 singles player Kris Shipman did not losing a game in straight-set victory over Ricky Anderson.

Rhoten and McBride earned a first-round win when WRV did not have an entrant at No. 2 doubles.

Scott and Corn both earned all-conference honors, as did Hamm and Schulte. Wagner, Nugent and Burkhart of North Daviess also were on the all-SWIAC team.

Bloomfield has a busy week ahead. The rained out Bedford North Lawrence has been rescheduled again to Monday, September 15, 4:45 p.m. at Bloomfield. The Cardinals go on the road Tuesday for the makeup of the rained out Barr-Reeve match. Wednesday Bloomfield travels to Farmersburg to take on North Central in a 4:30 p.m. match. Then they continue on the road to Owen Valley Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. match. To wrap the week off Saturday the Cardinals compete in the Loogootee Invitational Tournament. At 9:00 a.m Loogootee will take on Tecumseh and at 10:30 a.m. Bloomfield will play Wood Memorial. The championship match will be played at 12:30 p.m. with the consolation match at 2:00 p.m.
