Riggins third; T-Bird boys second at Martinsville

Bloomfield freshman Julie Riggins continued her impressive start to her high school cross country career, with a third place showing at the Martinsville Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Cards placed fourth in the 11-team Class A race.

Sydney Spice (sixth) and Tyler Odgen (10th) of Eastern Greene were the only other local runners who placed in the top 10. Odgen helped lead the T-Bird boys to a second-place finish in the 13-team boys race while Spice led the Lady T-Birds to an eighth-place finish.

Oldenburg's Ann Kuntz and Bridget Bruns paced Oldenburg Academy to the girls Class A team title with a 1-2 finish, just ahead of Riggins. Kuntz won the race with a time of 20 minutes and 37 seconds, while Bruns was three seconds ahead of Riggins for second place. The Bloomfield freshman covered the 3.1 mile course in 21:00. Spice finished the race with a time of 21:36.

Sarah Miller just missed the top 10 for the Cardinals with a 11th- place effort while Avery Frederick (27th), Paige Warren (30th), Meaghan Bucher (49), Abby Vest (54) and Kelsey Bucher (56) rounded out the Cardinals top seven runners.

Shelby Mitchell (33rd), Audrey Crane (48th), Rebecca Schwartz (51st) and Joanna Holsapple (70th) also competed for the Lady Thunderbirds.

Oak Hill took top honors in the Class A boys race with 65 points, while the T-Birds tallied 87 for their second place showing.

Eastern Greene freshman Brody Martin narrowly missed the top 10, as he was out sprinted to the finish line by teammate Odgen, who had a time of 17:50.09 while Martin was clocked at 17:50.18.

J.L. Cullison finished 18th with a time of 18:18, while teammates Tyler Igel (24th), Brent Fielder (30th) Keith Milhoan (40th) and Travis Pate (44th) rounded out the top seven runners for the T-Birds.

Andy Cochrane was the top finisher for the Cardinals as the junior placed 19th in a time of 18:30. Bloomfield place sixth with 160 points.

Kyle Smith was second on the Cardinals team with a 31st place effort in 18:54, while Matthew Hanauer (36th), Gavin Thompson (37th), Tony Alberson (46th), Robert Buka (49th) and Graham Helms (53rd) rounded out the Cards top seven.
