The victim was identified as Chad Talley, 33, of Dugger.
Law enforcement officials were dispatched to the scene at 7:36 p.m. Friday.
The lake is located just off of State Road 159 -- just south of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) property office near Dugger.
A body was recovered from the lake at 8:17 p.m. and was transported to Sullivan County Community Hospital in Sullivan, according to Indiana Conservation Officer public information spokesman Max Winchell.
Indiana Conservation Officers Gregg Swanson and Mike Gregg, the Dugger Town Marshall Dave Heaton and Sullivan County Sheriff's Department deputies were called to the scene.
Winchell told the Greene County Daily World that C.O. Gregg Swanson was working in the area on routine patrol near the lake when the dispatch came in to the Greene County Sheriff's Department.
He arrived on the scene in about seven minutes from the time he got the call.
Swanson was able to quickly suit up in diving gear and made a recovery of the victim in about 19 feet of water. Officers worked to revive the victim and transported to the hospital, according to Winchell.
"He (the victim) was down (in the water) about 15 minutes," Winchell said.
He continued, "It was one of those rare occasions when the officer was in the area and had his boat with him. He got his equipment on quickly and got Dugger Town Marshal David Heaton to take him out in the boat and he went right down and found the guy."
Winchell said witnesses at the scene told investigators that victim was attempting to swim across the lake and got about 100 yards from the shore and went down. Several people tried to free dive in an effort to rescue Talley, but they were unsuccessful.
An autopsy and a toxicology screen has been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
There is evidence that alcohol may have been involved in the mishap, Winchell added.
The victim graduated from Union High School in 1993.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with Bro. J. B. Smith officiating. Burial in the Woodward Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m.Tuesday, and before services Wednesday at the funeral home.
