Linton Library Board hears questions about building transfer

Thursday, August 28, 2008

The Linton Library Board of Trustees held a public hearing for the 2009 budget prior to their regularly scheduled meeting. Library budgets are due by mid September.

Donna Kluesner, Tony Kluesner, and Fred Markle addressed the board with questions about the old Carnegie building transfer. They represent the newly formed not-for-profit organization that plan to utilize the historical building as a Carnegie Heritage and Arts Center.

Attorney John Rowe discussed the future deeding of the facility to the organization and some changes will be made to the conveyance document. Items clarified were regarding covenants, personal liability of the Board of Directors for the Heritage and Arts Center, and the time frame allowed for future construction.

Library director Shelley Williams reported:

*The new sidewalks are in place. There are some problems with the topsoil used for back filling. The Board agreed that these areas must be replaced. Williams will contact the architect for the project. The City of Linton will be working on the installation of the new flag pole sometime next week.

*An agreement with the library's two pages for temporary as needed work has been reached for the coming year. Two more AARP helpers start next week.

*The Library is sponsoring the 2nd Youth Art Contest and more entries have been received than last year. The entries are coming from other county areas as well. Students ages 13-18 have until Friday morning to submit their art. All entries will then be on display at Humphreys Park and judging takes place on Monday. The artwork then moves to the library for display for one week. The top two winners in each category will receive prizes. There will also be a People's Choice Award.

*The Friends of the Library have underwritten the summer reading program. The costs were a little over $3,000. The Friends are also paying membership fees for the four staff members to the ILF. These members will be attending conferences for certification.

Future Library programs include the following: Robert Lamb, book discussion, author of Lone Tree: Prosperity, Humor, and The Great Depression, Saturday from 1:00-3:00. Copies of his book are available to purchase. This program will be of special interest to history "buffs"; Larry Massa, book reading and signing, author of Catacombs, Thursday, Sept. 4th at 6:30 P.M.; David Benefiel, advanced genealogy class presentation, to be held Sept. 27th, lasting most of day.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18.
