Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin reported that his deputies and Sturgis Emergency Services responded to Glencoe Campground around 7 p.m. after receiving a report of people being struck by lightning.
Upon arrival, it was found that 31-year-old Shawn Donovan of Belle Fourche, 28-year-old Judy Peterson of Circle, Minn., and 48-year-old Deborah Strahla of Jasonville, Ind., suffered injuries related to the lightning strike.
"It appears they were all on the hill at the ticket booth when the strike occurred. While it didn't appear they were actually struck by a lightning bolt, they did suffer injuries," he said.
The three were all treated and released. Meanwhile over at the Kick Start Travel Plaza, just east of Glencoe Campground, David Hurley of California was hit by a pole that held a banner and was pushed over by the high winds. Hurley, whose age is not listed, was complaining of head and shoulder pain.
