| Greene County Daily World file photo ON PROBATION: Linton-Stockton High School football coach Steve Weber (left) talks to his Miners during a timeout. Weber and his Miners are on probation for the 2008-09 season for violation for Indiana High School Athletic Association Rule 15-3.1c (Football players wore full protective equipment during summer camp). |
Steve Weber knows he made a mistake and is in full agreement with the Indiana High School Athletic Association, which placed Weber's Linton-Stockton High School football team on probation for the 2008-09 season.
During the Miners' team camp the week of July 21, the Miners were in violation of Rule 15-3.1c (football players wore full protective equipment during summer camp).
"I have no excuses. I blew it," said Weber, who is beginning his ninth season in charge of Miner football fortunes and 13th year on staff. "I have never looked to go out there and cheat since I have been here. We have never cheated or bent the rules.
"If the IHSAA says you can practice so long and then have to take a break, that is what we do. I know the rule from the past, but I just spaced it out."
With the Miners having just one week of two-a-day practices because of school starting early, Weber was going into this season knowing that he had to make every minute count with a young team.
"To be honest, we did not get a whole lot done this summer and probably are behind other teams," said Weber, who guided the Miners to the Class A Sectional 40 championship in 2007. "When you hand out equipment, it takes a while to get everybody fitted for helmets, pads and pants.
"You can waste a lot of time trying to make sure that everything fits everybody. I just wanted to get the fitting out of the way during camp and maximize our time and get off and running for two-a-days. It was a complete oversight on my part."
Weber said that some of his coaches reminded him they went with half pads in the past.
"I was not even thinking about the rule and I don't think anyone on staff was thinking about that either," he said.
"We did not go out to break a rule on purpose. Everything just piled up with trying to get a young team ready. I am sorry for any embarrassment that this might have cause the school, the town and our fans."
IHSAA Commissioner Blake Ress stated in an e-mail to LSSH regarding the matter:
"For violations of IHSAA rules, the Association may give a school a warning or put them on probation without any additional punitive penalty. With that being said, probation is considered a more serious penalty than a warning and is usually the result of a more flagrant violation of a rule that there should have been no doubt that everyone knew including the coach. What being on probation really means is that any future, similar breach of the rules during the period of probation can result in penalties such as fines, forfeiture of revenue from tournaments, suspension of a coach, suspension of a team from participation, or suspension of a school from membership.
"Obviously, in your case I do not expect any of those actions to occur. However, I do not think there is any excuse for your coach having your players in full protective football gear for a summer camp. Not only is this a violation of a long standing rule that every football coach should know; it is also a health and safety issue considering the heat and humidity that is common in Indiana during the summer."
Weber said that he respects Commissioner Ress and accepts the decision, but believes his track record speaks for itself.
"I just made a mistake. I am far from being perfect," Weber said. "We do not play ineligible players and do not bend the rules. We have tried to run a respectable program, but at times people make mistakes.
"This was not done on purpose or out of spite for the IHSAA. If you think I did something like this on purpose, then you have no clue to what I am all about. People who know me realize this wasn't anything intentional. I am human and just made a mistake trying to get a young team ready."
The Miners will scrimmage at Cloverdale at 7 p.m. on Friday and then open the regular season at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22 at Eastern Greene.

Nah. I will tell you what the funniest thing here is. The funniest thing here is Linton Miner football fans trying to enable Coach Weber because this is about Linton football.
Someone made a comment about how you would all be reacting if it was some other school. I would add to that how you would all be reacting if it was another Linton program.
Here is the bottom line: Coach Weber did know what he was doing, and he did know that it was in violation of the IHSAA rules. He is not that stupid, and he has been coaching for some time now. Whether or not you THINK this is about competitive advantage or not, he still knowingly broke the rule. Is that ok with you? For an employee of LHS to knowlingly break a rule?
He even said why he did it: He did it because they were behind in preparation. Hello, duh! Would that then tell you it was on purpose. I would say wake up, but you are already awake and enable it because it is Linton football. Good for you! lol
I have read all the comments which I find very interesting to say the least. My concerns are based on experiences within our family concerning correcting an error with a students grade. It seems its not what you know but who you know.
I myself attended Linton-Stockton High School and know for a fact that Mr. Weber is a respectful guy. I may have not been in football, but taking his class and delivering something to him during office help, helped show me the kind of person he is. He truly forgot the rule, and he knows that he forgot. Give him a break and let it go.
For the person who said that he did this because he knew he had a terrible team this year. That is entirely not the case. There is a lot of talent in this year's senior class, and I'm pretty positive that the Miners will make it as far, if not farther than the Miners didast year.
GO MINERS!!!
It is funny to me that Easter Greene is on probation as well... but nothing is being mentioned about that? Makes you wonder why we are focusing on one football team in the area instead of both teams that are on probation?
i know it wasnt violence so reduce the punishment why not ?
Wow. Talk about some axe grinding. I'd hate to be a teacher/coach in Greene County. There sure must not be much going on back in Linton these days. Y'all need a new hobby!
#1: The football players were suspended because they vandilized street signs...I don't think what Coach Weber did was as serious as that.
#2. Yes, Coach Weber forgot about this rule....Therefore, I doubt that he "turned himself in." And so what that he didn't?
#3. I'm sure he did apologize to the boys. They are his number one priority. I'm very close with this staff/program and Coach Weber is just not the kind of person to put the team, program, or school in any kind of jeopardy.
#4. If you think that this is the worsed team Linton has had, you have another thing coming and I can't wait for us to prove you wrong.
GO MINERS!
Don't stop believin'!!! :)
MinerFan-- You are right but I hope people do that with their teachers as well.
Minermama...I agree with you on some points. I don't want to see him fired and I think anyone that says that is overreacting in a major way. These coaches all do a good job and Steve made a mistake. As I said in my earlier post we could argue whether there was intent or not all day long. The only person that knows that, is Coach Webber. My only beef with the whole situation is that we should be setting a standard that is above board when it comes to rules. Yes, he admitted his mistake and I applaud him for that. However, when the coaches, teachers and administrators are not held to the same standards and are not subject to the same punishments as the players and students then we have a serious issue with our system. I will support these coaches and players just like I always have. However, if you think that his punishment is fair compared to what some of his players received in the spring, I would like to know on what basis you make your decision? His decision affected the entire team and school community and it would have made more sense to me for the disciplinary action to be directed toward him in the form of a 1-2 game suspension than to punish the entire team because he "blew it".
Every sports season we as parents/sports fans seem to find reasons to complain about coaches. Everything from our children not receiving enough playing time to second guessing play calling/ line-ups etc. Sure, we are all geniuses when we are sitting at home on our rears saying how we would have done this or that-but the point is WE ARE AT HOME!
Our LHS coaches are the ones who are out there everyday busting their rears trying to teach our children their respective sport. These coaches are just trying to do the jobs that they were hired to do and that is to put the best team on the floor/field as possible.
The coaches are not getting rich. If you take the time they put in for running practices, games, meetings, talking to the media, meeting with parents- I can assure you that they take home less than minimum wage. Now how many of us out there would subject ourselves to the constant scrutiny of coaching for a very small payoff? They do it for the love of the sport and working with kids. It's a good thing they do. If it weren't for sporting activities some kids would find themselves with nothing constructive to do and could quit possibly end up in trouble. I can see the blogs now. "It's just not fair that little Johnny got arrested for having a meth lab. It's not his fault, it's societies. He was bored. Their is absolutely nothing to do in this town"
We are lucky to have such good coaches in our school system. In past few years our teams have brought home several sectional titles and have sent players on to play at the college level. As a parent I have would have no problems with letting my children play for any of the current coaches and if a problem presented itself I would handle it with the coach and not drag their name through the mud on a newspaper blog.
Maybe we should take time out and thank a coach. Thank them for giving their time to teach our children. Thank them for doing what others don't or can't. Thank them for being there for our kids. Tell them what they do is important.
-Good luck to all LHS coaches this year!-
rbrett must be a Sullivan fan.
I played for coach Weber from 99-03 and any of if not all of you former players agree the coaching staff have always done what they believed to the right thing for the team like practice right practice light, practice wrong practice long. and it put most of us in the best shape for the 4th quarter. I'm currently in the military and we wear our protective gear all the time so if you look at it, it is the same situation for protection and for training. If you don't like it then let your boy play a more safer sport like band.
Really, for years Coach Weber has been telling the boys to do what he says, NOT what he does. This shouldn't surprise anyone. He has the boys and they look up to him, both on the field and off the field, What is this telling them. We didn't get away with it THIS time. This is not the first time rules have been broken but it needs to be the last. Coach Weber should MAN UP, he didn't turn himself in someone else did. Boy what a lesson for our young men. Come on School Board it's time for you to MAN UP.
Pop you are right. Why should the kid's get in trouble for breaking a rule, or making a mistake and be punished but not Weber. He should be punished more than anyone because he is supposed to be the adult here and setting examples here for our kid's, not teaching them that it's ok to break the rules even though you know it's not right. I think a suspenision would be good for him teach him a lesson.
I just want to say that it's a shame that something like this is being blown completely out of proportion. Coach Webber has been a part of the Linton Coaching Staff for a number of years and he makes one mistake regarding the rules and everyone wants to condemn him for it? When he took over as Head Coach, no one gave him a chance, and now look what he's done to the program. Speaking as a former player, we did things the coaches way because that's what we had to do as players. It's a part of football. Where do you think the results from the games you watch come from? When I was on the team you didn't ask why you had to run full speed or practice in full gear. At this rate people are going to want pads be take away and we'll have flag football instead. I have a news flash for you, games are won and lost during the summer when you condition, having two-a-days, and running until you throw up. It shouldn't matter what you're wearing while you do it. They aren't won by complaining to Mommy and Daddy saying Coach made us run, and then have them go behind the coaches back and getting that coach in trouble. I was raised knowing if you have a problem with someone you take it up with them. People who come on here to bash him, bash the fact that he made a mistake HIS MISTAKE that he admitted that he was wrong in, obviously do not have a clue as to what they're talking about. This is football people not dancing. If you don't want your kid playing then take him off the team. We had an unwritten rule between all the guys on the team: you don't talk about what happens in practice...ever. You keep it to yourself. Now I know that there are rules, and yes one of them was broken but someone made a statement that couldn't have been closer to the truth, it is what minermama said: we have all broken the rules at one point in our life. Why should we come down on someone who has broken one rule when we all know we've broken a few in our lifetime? It seems to me that a lot of people don't like Coach Webber as a person or what he does as Coach, but I assure you that he has never put anyone in any danger. I know other guys that were on the team the same time as myself who could tell you the same thing. I gaurantee that people who express their "hatred" for Coach Webber because of a mistake, will all turn around and sing his praises if the Miners won Sectionals or anything else. And that's a shame, because that would such a condtradiction it wouldn't be funny. And you can revert back to what I said about when games are truly won. I hope we can move on from this because Coach Webber is a good guy and he knows how to prepare his kids. Take it easy on the guy seriously.
Very well said BigBaller....I agree..
Well I'll put my 2 cents in and that's not enough to buy enough gas to get me to Linton.. LOL... Weber admitted to breaking the rule. After he got caught. To say he forgot about the rule or it slipped his mind is ... well hog wash. That is probably the most important rule during the summer and during the week camp. If he didn't run full contact drills I don't believe it gave them that much of an advantage. If he ran full contact drills (which are against the rules and one of the two reasons the rule is there) then he got an advantage. And that would be wrong and I believe he should be punished for a game or two. He doesn't need to be fired for it. But I agree that he should be treated just like the players that are suspended for the stop sign stuff (even though not all of the players manned up on that one because some of them didn't go out the night they caught them. And they didn't step forward and say the did it. So not all the ones that did it got punished). So I agree that he should get a game or two off. I don't think that would hurt Linton at all in their first two games. But I also think that he still might get that. I don't think there has been any meetings to say that it is all taken care of. I think he still might get one game off. So I think everyone here is jumping a little fast to get so mad. It will happen just give it time. But I will be honest the way Linton treats some of their coach's he might get fired but I think that would be wrong unless he's doing something that I don't know about that's worse then this little problem.
no one is answering the questions. Who turned him in? What is the schools position. POP brings up a great point. Is the school taking any action? Kids would have to pay. You can say this is no big deal, but it was big enough to get a letter and a punishment from the IHSAA.
But my main question, who really believes that he didn't know he was at least bending the rules to which he says this program never does.
Websters has a definition for this." to violate rules dishonestly " It appears shortly after "cheaper" in the dictionary.
Facts:
- I am from a Greene County school that doesn't have a football program, but that doesn't really matter.
- Weber broke a fairly black and white rule. Did he admit it himself or get turned in. Methinks that he would have stated if he turned himself in.
- I don't live in Linton, or give to craps about the Miner program. I was just commenting based on what Weber stated in his comments. They were behind on learning and are younger than in past seasons.
My firm belief is that coaches should know the rules, whether it be football, soccer, golf, or pageants (as one poster suggested).
Good luck to the Miner squad, but if this happened over at Eastern or North Daviess, you all would be the ones attacking and wondering and not saying it's "no big deal."
Does Coach Weber have his principals licenses? I hear there's a job opening in Bloomfield and they could certainly use someone like him who truly cares about the students and athletes.
Give the guy a break!
My honest opinion is that Coach Weber, who I haven't had the privilege of meeting, has made a mistake, was caught, admitted the wrong-doing and he and his team were punished. The media has informed us in a professional manner; in a well written article by Mr. Hargis and now the members of the community should move on and support the program.
Additional punishment for Coach Weber from the school does not seem appropriate to me because he has already had his team put on probation by the State. That combined with the personal embarrassment of making a mistake, such as this, should be sufficient to preclude future occurrences of these types of violations.
I see no reason to unknowingly attack the personal character and integrity of Coach Weber for making a mistake and the comparisons to the absurd activities of Kelvin Sampson are totally unwarranted.
I, for one, would not condemn a man for one mistake and I am glad that I have not been so judged by all throughout my life.
I'd like to offer my best wishes to Coach Weber and the Miner Football Team for a very successful year.
rbrett
who are you to say the team is worse than ever? have you been to all of the practices? Are you on the coaching staff? or are you just another team we defeat every year? i dont think they should have been out there either however; we were handed our punishment. People always think they can handle things better and others get off easy. Those are " know it all" people who sit on thier butts not helping to improve anything or make a difference, but critize everything else other do. If you think you can do better, STEP UP!!!!
Ok he made a mistake and we can argue the intent of it all day. The only question I have is why is he not being suspended a game or two? Aren't some of his players not playing for a game or two because they broke the rules last spring with the stop sign damage? They admitted it and our paying a price. They should get credit for "manning up" as well. I give him credit for admitting it, but why does our adminstration hold the kids who play to a higher standard than the coach who is to set the example. The punishment should be on an equivalent basis. Does anyone realize that our team is one bad choice or mistake away from losing the entire season. One big fight one parent out of line. Go back to the 80's and you will know what I am talking about. I don't think he should lose his job I just think that the punishment should be on par with what the players experienced.
This is ridiculous. You characters who are jumping all over Coach Weber are not doing it because the players wore pants instead of shorts. You're using that as an excuse because of whatever agenda you have to try to get him. You're not really Miner fans. Weber has admitted the mistake and apologized. It shouldn't have happened but it did. Now get over it and move on. Linton Miner football is one of the best things this town has. BTW, "Proud to live in Linton", The "large" coaching staff Coach Weber has are mostly all volunteers and are not paid by the school.
rbrett:
To say that Coach Weber did this to try and get an advantage because the team isn't that good this year is pretty rude. Why don't you just come out and say that the boys suck this year? I'm sure you're perfect at everything you do right? Why don't you go find some pageant somewhere and tell the little girl competing to put on some more makeup because she needs an advantage because she's not as pretty as the rest? I know that was a far fetched comparison, but does it not occur to you that some of the players might be reading this? If Linton lacks Miner spirit this year, it won't be because of the actions of Coach Weber, but because of all of the over-opinionated, uneducated people that are leaving protesting comments!
Pretty soon Coach Weber will be able to sign autographs and them actually be worth money with all of the local media attention he is getting.
My question still...did he turn his violation in or did someone else report it?
What is the school's stance on this situation? I have yet to see a comment from a school official?
I am sure he is a great guy, clearly a great coach, who just made a mistake. But again rules are rules for a reason, most of them are black and white.
My only question is this? Weber, have you apologized to your boys? Have you told them the situation, explained to them why they were put on probation? From what I have heard, this has yet to be brought up to the team. Out of everyone, your team should be the first to know the facts.
WOW!! I can't believe this is such a big issue!! You say coach Weber was doing this to get an advantage?? What advantage?I'm sure some of them dress in gear at home and practice...What's so differtent, whether they do it at home or at practice??? Coach weber if he was trying to be SNEAKY could of had a practice without telling anyone except the players and did the most awful thing had them wear pants to this "secret" practice...SHAME ON HIM!!! Do you really think that this is going to give the team that big of an advantage??? If their going to win games it isn't going to be because they wore pants to their practices!!!
I just don't get what the big fuss is about!! Get over it!!! Coach Weber is a GREAT coach and a very nice young man!!!
This whole thing makes me sick....you'd think he had the guys out there in 100 degrees going gasser after gasser. I am from the old days...and I tell ya, practices are't nearly as hell related tday. Helmets and shorts!!>>!> We didn't see any of that. EVerybody yelling about rules as if this really affected any outcome, or acquired any advantage....jeeeez...every summer camp I've ever seen is just basics...sets, schemes, you go here on that, there on this. There is so much more focus on health today than there ever was back in the older days...and no question that the coaching staff pays attention to that. People are on a witch hunt...and it really sickens me. There are much worse things in life to focus you efforts on.
To the naysayers on this thread, i ask you, whats your real issue here? It seems that most of you are just looking for something to complain about, and now you have your reason. I'm assuming most everyone on this site lives in the area. What you should be doing is supporting your local football team. As a former player of Weber, I can vouch that he is as "by the book" as any coach in the area. GO MINERS!!!
Wins are wins,,, and everyone likes to win... but the head coach does have a large coaching staff that is also paid by the school.... should these coaches know the rules?? Yes, it was probably wrong to have the team do this.... Wrong is wrong....Rules are Rules.... not a new rule this year, sad for the team..... shame on the coaching staff.... don't try and minumize your deliberate wrong doing... so let the coaching staff take the punishment and let the kids play!
RBrett, all teams worked on form tackling, line techniques and such. Football is not football without that. You are not aloud to go full contact(live tackling, low blocking, hitting below the waist)or wear full protective gear, you are aloud to wear shoulder pads, helmets and mouthpieces. This leaves out pants and girdle pads. I did what every other coach did in camp, nothing more, nothing less, I just did it with pants on. I dont care if you care for me or the linton program, it is clear you have an agenda with me or the program, but you need to get your facts straight if you are going to put me down. Come watch practice somtime, see how we do things.
S Weber
Coaches are human, they make mistakes. However, to knowingly make a mistake as a "leader" of a program is a big deal. I respect the fact that Coach Weber openly admitted, (after the fact?), that he broke a rule.
My questions is did he turn himself in and admitt the violation of the rule? Or did someone else turn him in?
The worst part is that the entire program will get a "black" eye from the situation. Lots of hardword and dedication will constantly be mixed in with remarks about rules and cheating. Its unfortunate to the players, who only do what the "leader" instructs them to do.
Clearly, the rule appears to minor, however is the intent of the rule just as important? Sometimes we need to look at the entire picture. I think it is great to see a coach admitt error, however, people need to take it for what it is..down playing it doesn't help people learn. Sure you move on, and I am sure Miner football will move on..but I wouldn't attempt to spin this as a positive.
I'm thinking coach should run for office. I belive we've heard this excuse before---
RBrett makes a statement that is full of holes and completely inaccurate, but that is besides the point...so what was your point?
Coach Weber was running the same type of practices every other coach in the state was running. He was implementing the offense, doing light drills, and getting an idea what team he had. The only difference was...they were wearing pants.
The proverbial duck is a duck statement works for uneducated statements/blogs as well.
I agree with rbrett, and if what coach weber says about the other coaches saying something about wearing half pads in the past why at that time did he not have the boys remove the pads and continue practice? I just don't understand how one could SPACE this rule that has been a part of the IHSAA for such a long time??? Quack Quack
Vote4NewCouncil:
Have you ever played football? How is getting used to being in full pads NOT an advantage? Are you joking? You can go through tackling drills/practice form tackling/work on o-line blocking technique and much more. This is all besides conditioning in full pads getting kids used to the heat in their full equipment.
This is besides my point, though. Weber knew the rule and he chose to break it. Come on Linton fans, look at the facts. Weber needed more time this year because his team is worse than it has been in a while and he is trying to stay competitive.
I didn't think it was an advantage, I thought it was a safety issue dealing with the heat in full gear. Was that not one of the reasons for the rule.
You say he is taking responsibility? I say, he says he forgot. That's not responsibility. I find it funny that not one person on his staff or team brought it up. Did they do it one day or did they do it everyday at camp. Just asking.
Get over it. OK I'm over it. But call it what it is. A coach doing something he knew was against the rules but didn't think anyone would find out.
rbrett: There is no advantage between wearing pants or shorts. Did you even play football? Were you at the practice and saw what they were doing? They did not do anything they needed pants for. Yes weber broke a rule, but no advantage was gained.
well at least it's not like "spy gate" with the patriots!!!! lol
it was a simple slip up, he admitted he was wrong and is taking the heat from it, now lets move on.
all of you that wants his head, take it up with the school board at the next meeting, otherwise lets all just get ready for another exciting fall sports season...........
The simple fact is that Weber had his proverbial "hand in the cookie jar" and he got caught. You're telling me that a tenured head football coach simply spaced an IHSAA rule that hasn't changed since he started? Take off your red and blue tinted glasses and see what everyone else interested in this story sees: the coach got caught trying to gain an advantage, due to the perceived inexperience of his squad. Weber needs to admit THAT. Then you can all stand up and say that he's being a man and admitting it. What you all see right now is a cover up for him getting caught.
If it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck....
*waste of space
If this story wasn't in the newspaper, some would say Linton was trying to cover it up. Now that it is in the paper, others are saying it's a pathetic waster of space.
Could you please stop being so cynical of every little thing all the time?
I'm just glad they don't put speeders in jail. There would be no one around to watch a fine young team play football. Like minermama said no one is perfect. So to the ones griping about it. Get over yourself and lets watch some good old butt kicking Miners football.
exwildchild....you put it absolutely perfectly...!
Wow, it appears not much has changed since I moved from the "exciting" town of Linton. I find it pathetic that a story such as this is considered such a major headline. I'm sorry, but this seems like such a dumb argument. Coach Weber has admitted his faults and has apologized, what more does he need to do? Some of the greatest coaches in sports have made some of the biggest mistakes, at least Coach Weber didn't choke one of his players! We are in the heart of a bible belt area... let's be true Christians and forgive him shall we? It makes me want to cry out loud... "Why can't we all just get along!?!?" Let's take the energy devoted to this story and use it to kick some football tail this season!!! Go Miners! As for the ones that want to see Coach Weber get in more trouble, you better hope that you've never made any mistakes that could get thrown back up in your face later on.
per moenia urbis I agree and could not have said it better, very well stated!
NO matter what side of the fence you sit on...Steve has done the respectful thing and laid it all out in black and white. Taking full responsibility, but also taking full blame. A lot of people wouldn't and haven't in the past. I am proud to be associated with the coaches and Miner Football, and certainly harbor no shame in it. Oh sure...there will be the naysayers crying about this and that...always have been and always will be. There are far more serious things to worry about than this. lesson learned, and forward we go. I'm sure we'll get an earful from it come next year contracts.
Wow! Image if everyone immediately owned up to their mistakes like Coach Weber just did! We'd have a different world!
Coach Weber stepped up and admitted he was wrong and is taking full responsibility for his action. It is time to move on. It sounds like the football team has other things to worry about this season.
ok coach now lets move on and win us true fans and alum are behind you.
Seems to me, that after nine years of coaching this sport, wouldn't you think he would know the rules by now? And if he doesn't, maybe they should get some one who does. Come on...do you really believe NO ONE thought about it? Just one more person who thinks the rules don't apply to them. Rules were put there for a reason, it's not up to him to decide when and if to go by them.
Who cares? What difference does it make? They should let them practice anywhere anytime anyhow. Superfluous rules are superfluous.
You're the man Steve, don't fret it!
It takes a big man to admit he made a mistake. Thanks Coach Weber for admitting a mistake when the blame could've been put elsewhere.
Looking forward to a great season of Miner football!
Coach Weber-Way to man up and admit your mistake. As a huge Miner football fan I can assure you still have the support of many fans.
You know- IU had a basketball coach that could learn something from you about admitting mistakes. Coach Sampson blamed everybody but himself for the rule breaking at IU.
Your record on the field speaks for itself.
I look forward to another successful season for the Miners.
