The Bloomfield School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to approve Stella Royal as the interim principal of the jr./sr. high school.

She has served as assistant principal of the school for the past 11 years.

"We're looking forward to a smooth start to the school year, seeing all of the students back and welcoming the new students," Royal said after the meeting.

At this time, she has no intention of applying for the principal opening, although she was offered the job by the school superintendent and board.

"I was honored and pleased they asked," she said, noting that the timing is not right for her to assume the role.

Royal will assume the interim role Aug. 4 and be paid a daily rate of $345.56 for the duration of the position. She will resume her position as assistant principal at the conclusion of the interim placement.

Former Jr./Sr. High Principal Greg Parsley was recently hired as principal at Vincennes Lincoln High School.

In other personnel business, the board approved the hiring of Ralph Raper as interim jr/sr. high school assistant principal.

Raper will assume the role Aug. 8 and be paid a daily rate of $300 during the interim placement.

Raper -- who didn't attend the meeting -- is a retired administrator of the Bloomfield School District.

After the meeting, Royal offered some words on Raper's placement.

"I am very much excited that we will be here at the same time. I'm also very honored that I get to work with him. He's a great man."

In other business, the board hired Deborah Harshman as the school nurse. She is a registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern Indiana.

Two special education teachers were also hired during the meeting.

Erica Pemberton and Erin Raper will assume the roles of elementary special education teachers for the 2008-09 school year.

In other personnel matters, Joanna Fish was hired as the sixth grade science/social studies teacher for the upcoming school year.

The approval of Eleanor Pope's retirement effective Dec. 31 was also granted by the board.

Superintendent Dan Sichting noted that Pope will be missed.

"She's (Pope) more than a secretary. She's a counselor. … She will be missed and we wish her the best of luck in her retirement," he said.

In other business, the board:

* Approved the maternity leave of Laura McIntosh, a second-grade teacher, effective Oct. 4 -- Dec. 19.

* Approved the maternity leave of Jennifer Heaton, a jr./sr. high math teacher, effective Oct. 14 -- Dec. 19.

Mr. Raper-- he was my principle at Switz City in the 70's.. he was awesome. If he could use (allowed to use) his skills today as then the school would be fixed on some issue. In all respect and I do respect him what an awesome man. I would like to shake his hand for some correction he did to a "friend" of mine.

Outstanding skills this person has.

The team of R & R, Royal and Raper, will be a good one, congrat's to each. Both represent the school well. I'm guessing there won't be any more yelling, screaming or cursing at the teachers meetings, and that, my friends, is a good thing.

Congrats to both. Mr. Raper will be a great welcome back addition to Bloomfield.

Ralph Raper is a class act who brings integrity, honesty, discipline and love for kids back to Bloomfield School. I applaud the Bloomfield BOE for their appointments!

When my grandchildren were still in school they spoke so highly of Ralph Raper. Perhaps they could use Mr. Raper as a model of what the next principal should be like.

I'm glad to see the board isn't rushing to make a full time decision. They need to do what is best for the future of our school.
