Derek Corn of Bloomfield lived up to his No. 1 seeding in the Daviess County Open held July 18-19 at the Sports Complex in Washington by defeating No. 2 seed Kyle Haas 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in the finals.
Corn stating "I was a little nervous for a while in the third set" may have been an understatement.
Corn was comfortably ahead 5-2 in the third set when Haas made run to close the gap to 5-4. Corn quieted his nerves and won 4 of the next 5 points to take the boys 16 bracket championship.
That wasn't the only close match for Corn. He was pushed in the semifinal match by Linton's Seth Herndon 7-5, 6-4.
This is a match that could be replayed in the upcoming boys' tennis season. Corn and Herndon will most likely play the No. 1 singles spot on their high school teams. In the quarterfinals Herndon had to fight of Luke Zarnoth of Dale 6-3, 5-7, 6-0.
The other boys 16 competitor from Bloomfield, Joel Oliphant was beaten by Haas in the first round of the main draw but went on to win the consolation tournament with wins over Robert Wilson and Zarnoth.
In the girls 18 bracket, Bloomfield's Bailey Maryfield got another tough draw for the second tournament in a row. This tournament she drew bracket finalist Bailey Brown of Evansville in the first round. Maryfield was defeated 6-0, 6-0.
Maryfield made her way into the finals of the consolation tournament by beating Megan Prickett of Evansville 6-2, 6-3. Maryfield lost a heart breaker to Jamie Brown of Otwell 7-6(8), 6-2

A job well done to Derek, Seth, and Bailey!
