EDWARDSPORT -- Duke Energy's Midwest charitable foundation announced $100,000 in grants to Knox and area county not-for-profit organizations during a ceremony Monday at Edwardsport.
The announcement was part of a ceremony commemorating the construction of a $2.35 billion coal gasification power plant in the northern Knox County community.
The grants funded by shareholders, include:
*$25,000 to the Edwardsport Volunteer Fire Department for safety equipment and training.
*$25,000 to the city of Bicknell Fire Department for safety equipment and training.
*$10,000 to the Pace Community Action Agency for a variety of services in the area -- including services offered in Greene County.
*$15,000 to Generations Area 13 Agency on Aging for Knox County's help line and other programs for older adults.
*$10,000 to Southern Indiana Homeownership for its community housing program.
*$15,000 to the North Knox School Corporation for educational services, summer reading and library materials.

"The plant will cost approximately $2 billion to construct. That cost will be offset by more than $460 million in future local, state and federal tax incentives. The plant will result in an average electric rate increase of approximately 16 percent phased in from 2008 through 2012"
Electricity is still quite a bargain in my book.
I never said it wasn't. I often wish I had electric heat instead of gas. But I digress, the money Duke Energy is throwing around is money they have already charged their customers by raising their rates. I find it interesting that to better serve their customers businesses must charge their customers more money. Don't you?
