Plenty of banging and crunching at the 2008 Greene County Fair Demo Derby

Danny Grimes emerged the first heat winner.

The curtain dropped on the 2008 version of the Greene County Fair on Saturday night with banging, crunching and more than a few scratches with the staging of the annual Demolition Derby.

The object of this down home event is simple.

Contestants driving home-made painted, backyard engineered vehicles of all sizes, shapes and colors, bang into each other in the center of the grandstand arena. The last car standing and running is declared the winner.

Stewart Osman's lime green-colored entry was judged the "Prettiest Car" in the demolition derby in an applause vote from the crowd.

A near capacity crowd witnessed this event -- cheering on their favorite drivers -- most hailing from the local Greene County area.

Jeff Sams won the overall trophy for winning the championship heat.

The event drew 21 cars.

Sullivan county had there mud bog the same night, it used to be you could go to greene county derby one weekend then to sullivans the next. I just think people would have more to do if they still had it spread out and more local entertainment without costing a arm or leg to travel.

Yeah, I was wondering if anyone had pictures of the chicken dance competition...my little girls were competing against brock in the end..lol. I did not have a camera...pretty much because I didn't think I would need one. But if anyone has pics of the chicken dancersI would like to see them! Congrats to Jeff and Brock too...but I still have 2 of the top 5 chicken dancers in Greene County in my family :-)

Dtown - I know several people that do not want to participate because of some of Greene county rules. Some of the stuff they have to do to these cars takes them out of eligibility for events in other counties. They would rather enter 2 or more derbies elsewhere than build a car just for Greene County.

Jeff was driving an 80s lincoln not an impala! The derby was great, but what about the chicken dance. Who can forget about that? Yes, the trophy should have went to a kid, but Brock Howell had the guts to get out there and do it. I think we should all say congrats to not only jeff, but Brock too.

Not sure what the guy's name was, but he was the only one with a white car. Most, if not all of the cars, were black. He was the hardest hitter too. It was fun to watch him drive. He deserved to win. It looked like a late 80s Impala. That car was built tough. Most cars had their trunks completely smashed in. The white bandit had some dents and smashed fenders but both bumpers, with the solid frame's support, stayed pretty firm.
