Man jailed after alleged coffee shop burglary

Friday, July 4, 2008

A 24-year-old Linton man was jailed after allegedly breaking in to the Francisco DeBorja Coffee House on South Main Street and severely injuring himself in the process early Friday.

Justin W. Jones, was booked into the Greene County Jai at Bloomfield at 5:04 a.m.

The Linton Police Department received a 911 call around 2 a.m. from a guest staying at the bed and breakfast located upstairs from the Coffee House located at 20 S. Main St. in Linton. The caller said they had heard glass breaking.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Jones inside the coffee house bleeding profusely from the leg.

According to the police report written by LPD Cpl. Paul Clark, Jones was disoriented and officers believed he was intoxicated.

Rob Turpin, the owner of Francisco De Borja, said a brick had been thrown through the front door to his business and he believed someone had also tried to break in to the next-door entrance to the upstairs bed and breakfast.

Besides breaking the glass, Turpin said the front door appeared to have been kicked in.

Turpin said nothing was taken during the incident but there was severe damage and the store was unable to open on what was expected to be their busiest day of the year.

The damage was due to the large amount of blood lost by Jones inside the coffee house.

Turpin said he had to call in a company that specializes in bio-hazard cleaning to come in from Chicago. The bio-hazard team worked throughout the day Friday.

Turpin said he hoped the business would be able to reopen on Monday but it depended on the progress of the cleanup.

LPD officers transported Jones to Greene County General Hospital where he was treated and released.

At one point during the incident, Jones reportedly managed to kick an officer who was driving the patrol vehicle transporting him, which in turn caused the vehicle to weave.

Preliminary charges against Jones include burglary and battery upon a law enforcement officer. He's being held on $14,000 bond.

LPD Cpl. Paul Clark is the investigating officer on the case.

Sue, so you are saying that he doesn't deserve any punishment? That is nonsense. You do the crime, you pay the time.

His co-workers really liked him and enjoyed working with him.Him and I always go out and eat or go shopping. We really enjoy doing things together. Now i have to do things buy my self, cos his so called friend came and got him that thursday night to go party. If they just left him alone he wouldn't be where his is now.His friends always come over real late at night to visit him knowing that he has to work the next day and they don't have any respect for me either. They never knock on the door they just walk in.Friends like that he doesn't need. When he does get out and wants to live with me his so call friends isn't allowed at my house. I really miss him and his dog misses him too.justin is trying to turn his life around. He's getting help. mudeyman, your logic is equivalent to that of a heavy drinker favorably comparing his drinking behavior to that of a raging alcoholic to justify it.

-- Posted by The Raven on Fri, Jul 11, 2008, at 6:12 PM

mudeyman,

Just because people are doing worse stuff than he is does not make it right. He could be the greatest person in the world, and I'm sure to someone he is, but from what this story reports, he broke the law. And from my understanding, when you break the law, there are consequences.

Lets all grow up act like adults i was a coworker with justin he seemed to be a very nice guy to me. Yes i agree it was wrong for him to go and do the stunt. who dont make mistakes anymore until you know the his future and the full story don't go and judge someone you don't even know.

Yes he is getting help whether you believe me or not. i hope he is learning a lesson and learns friends aren't all the seem to be lets choose wisely. just treat him like a human there is people doing worst stuff that what he done.

Thank You Chad Crynes for clarifying how they transported the young man. The way the article read didn't sound that way.

-- Posted by reb64 on Thu, Jul 10, 2008, at 10:00 PM

me too the previous posts took it off the subject completely, I ask to have these removed but they have not removed them they just removed the one that started all of that.

-- Posted by reb64 on Thu, Jul 10, 2008, at 6:35 PM

Just to clarify things, Jones was transported to the hospital by Ambulance from the scene. An officer was in the ambulance with him.

I know when I go to post a comment it says right above the comment box "Please be respectful of others and try to stay on topic". I think some people should read that sentence carefully especially the part of staying on topic and possibly look up it's meaning before posting.

I appologize

wow what does sex have to do with it? we're talking about police vehicles not being decontaminated

and me asking questions and getting answers boils down to sex? wow!!! you are obviously the disturbed one! oh and I was not sexually abused as a child! wow!

He was a disgruntled employee who was still holding a grudge because he was fired almost a year ago...there was no lovers quarrel involved. Nobody that I've talked to knows anything about the police car being decontaminated...but I do agree that hopefully the police followed Rob's lead to clean the car...although I still don't understand why there wasn't an ambulance that transported him.

-- Posted by lhsgraduate on Mon, Jul 7, 2008, at 3:49 PM

I think it's fair to say there is no "hate crime" aspect to this incident.

-- Posted by zenos on Mon, Jul 7, 2008, at 9:19 AM

reb64:

To make things more interesting, I think he was a former employee of the business.

quote from article:

"LPD officers transported Jones to Greene County General Hospital where he was treated and released

At one point during the incident, Jones reportedly managed to kick an officer who was driving the patrol vehicle transporting him, which in turn caused the vehicle to weave."

again, with the hipaa law's, why is it not stating that the squad car is being decontaminated?

Did Mr Turpin know him?

-- Posted by reb64 on Mon, Jul 7, 2008, at 6:46 AM

He is lucky to have not gotten shot.

-- Posted by america on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 9:34 PM

That really sucks. This is a wonderful business downtown and it was a holiday.

This guy should get the max!

-- Posted by america on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 9:33 PM

I'm still curious how Mr. Stearns thinks karma plays into this?

-- Posted by JamesMadison on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 8:20 PM

I would assume that if a suspect is bleeding profusely that the police officers would go ahead and call an ambulance instead of packing him off to the hospital themselves so I don't think we need to worry about the clean up of the police vehicle.

-- Posted by MamaElle on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 7:25 PM

junkmail is right. The legal term for it, which is contained in most every insurance policy, is "subrogation." Subrogation is where one party (Rob's insurer) steps into the shoes of another party (Rob) to benefit from that party's (Rob's) rights and remedies against a third party (thief).

-- Posted by The Raven on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 3:49 PM

I would imagine insurance will take care of it. Then they would in turn go after the suspect for reimbursement.

-- Posted by junkmail on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 3:41 PM

My question is this.....Who will have to pay for the cleanup?

If I were in Robs' place, I would try everything possible to make J. Jones pay for it. He might think twice before he does something stupid again!

-- Posted by hunter_47443 on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 2:35 PM

reb64, SaraLynn is right. HIPAA laws do not allow medical staff to disclose whether a person has a disease or not, so all incidents must be treated as if they have a disease. What they did with the clean-up was the right thing to do. Google "HIPAA" and you'll see that medical information these days is equivalent top secret war games info of the Cold War era.

-- Posted by The Raven on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 2:28 PM

actually there are laws regarding how blood and bodily fluids are cleaned up. All body fluids have to be treated as being contaminated since the general public in a case like this would not know the persons HIV status.

-- Posted by SaraLynn on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 12:23 PM

Well the way I'm reading it is that the "Karma" is all in the name of or incident that happened, Rob

my only question about this is: Is was there some kind of danger in his blood, like aides or hepititus or something? maybe the squad car should be decontaminated if there is, it should be for the next person who is transported to the jail, maybe mr turpin might know alittle more about this persons blood to go to that extreme on decontaminating his property.

-- Posted by reb64 on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 11:44 AM

Good point, junkmail. What ever happened to being happy for people who are successful? People here tend to sympathize with the underdog to a point where they despise anyone who has any success. That's just ridiculous.

-- Posted by The Raven on Sun, Jul 6, 2008, at 9:17 AM

I do not believe Mr. Turpin or anyone else for that matter deserves to have their business burglarized. Mr. Turpin has philanthroped the Head Start every year since he has operated his businesses. He tries to make our community better despite the local defeatist attitude.

What does Starbucks have to do with this conversation?

Oh yeah, you need a footnote for your asterisk.

-- Posted by junkmail on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 11:00 PM

Karma or Carma - Unimportant, you knew that word I meant.

The owner of the Coffee Shop Mr. Turpin was whom I was referring.

Nuff Said.

* Starbucks are on every corner & in many stores here on the west coast.

-- Posted by GoGreeneCounty.com on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 10:35 PM

Karma??...no in this fellers case its called stupidity..and nobody here uses there name,..thats why its called a screen name, and I dont know Bill,..can't we all just get along

-- Posted by Dtown on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 9:24 PM

I still want to know who Bill was refering to.

-- Posted by junkmail on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 9:19 PM

Amen, Charles!

-- Posted by The Raven on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 8:58 PM

Hmmmmm....lets see, we have a individual who tries to kick in a door on Main St (aren't there several street lights there..?) and when that doesn't succeed he throws a brick through the window and cuts himself very badly climbing in. Then after being detained by law enforcement he kicks an officer....then on top of all of this, we have individuals bickering about the correct spelling of a word. Wow, makes a person wonder......

-- Posted by charles on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 7:35 PM

Still lost on all this karma.

-- Posted by junkmail on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 6:49 PM

So anyway, karma on who Bill?

-- Posted by junkmail on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 6:07 PM

That why I've put it in "" but maybe a [sic] afterwards would have helped.

-- Posted by The Raven on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 2:32 PM

wow Raven! I had you mixed up with another "Raven" Sorry!

-- Posted by BobbiBlue on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 11:28 AM

spell check Raven and gogreenecounty it's Karma I believe.

-- Posted by BobbiBlue on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 11:26 AM

I agree with lhsgraduate. There's no "carma" about it, Bill.

-- Posted by The Raven on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 10:12 AM

Just to clarify this, it is spelled Karma and I would like to know how it plays into this?

-- Posted by LintonOutlaw on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 9:19 AM

Did the person mean karma? That's what ordinary folks call - what goes around, comes around. Did this person mean "karma" for the one who tried to rob the coffee shop, the one who owns the coffee shop, or the policeman who was kicked? What is this world coming to when one has to have a company from Chicago come all the way to Linton to clean up blood? If the suspect was transported in the police vehicle will the Chicago company have to clean the car too? Or will the city have to buy a new one?

-- Posted by pluto'saplanet on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 4:38 AM

I hope that for both the public's and his safety, he's put away for a while (and maybe get some help while he's there).

-- Posted by per moenia urbis on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 1:44 AM

Ooh Ooh! Internet tough guys! My fav! :/

-- Posted by Coda on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 12:18 AM

This was a very serious incident and lives could have been at stake. There is a family staying in the apartment upstairs and thankfully they heard Justin doing what he did. If this would've happened any earlier it could have been an employee or even Rob. I'm sure Justin has caused thousands of dollars worth of damage so far. I'm just glad that everything has been taken care of and only one person was hurt in the end. By the way Mr. Bill Stearns, stay out of it. You've caused enough problems when you lived here...keep your thoughts in California.

-- Posted by lhsgraduate on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 12:18 AM

Call it spam, but I do not HIDE behind my name. I back my comments.

-- Posted by GoGreeneCounty.com on Sat, Jul 5, 2008, at 12:15 AM

Saying "carma" is a bit ridiculous, isn't it Bill Stearns? Aren't you living in California now? Are there not a few newspapers out there that you can spam your website name on?

-- Posted by The Raven on Fri, Jul 4, 2008, at 10:47 PM

What does the CircumArctic Rangifier Monitoring and Assessment Network have to do with this?

-- Posted by junkmail on Fri, Jul 4, 2008, at 8:14 PM

Carma
