UPDATED: State Road 67 closed for several hours after wreck involving semi and a farm tractor

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

WORTHINGTON - A 13-year-old rural Worthington boy was critically injured Wednesday evening when the farm tractor he was driving was struck by a semi truck on State Road 67.

Jordan Murdock was driving a John Deere tractor south on State Road 67 - about 2 1/2 miles north of Worthington near the intersection with County Road 50W -- when the 6:13 p.m. accident happened.

Murdock's John Deere tractor was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer driven by Royce Huffer, Jr., 56, of Vincennes, according to a report filed Greene County Sheriff's Department Deputy J. Aaron Smith.

Deputy Smith said Murdock's tractor was attempting to turn east onto County Road 50W from the state highway and turned into the path of the semi that was attempting to pass.

"Both vehicles went through the guardrail and came to rest on the southeast corner of County Road 50W and SR. 67," according to Smith.

The young boy suffered multiple internal injuries and was transported by Air-Evac helicopter ambulance to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis.

Late Wednesday night, he was listed in critical condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The impact from the crash spilled diesel fuel onto the highway-- forcing both lanes of the busy state roadway for more than three hours, according to a GCSD dispatcher.

Smith said the accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene was GSCD Deputy Bobby Pierce, personnel from the Worthington Police Department, Fairplay-Grant Township Fire Department, Indiana State Police, Indiana State Department of Transportation and the Worthington-Jefferson Fire and Rescue Department.
