A spokesperson for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) District Office in Vincennes says State Road 54E into Bloomfield is safe for motorists to drive on.

The roadway which was closed from the State Road 57 junction -- about six miles west of Bloomfield into the Bloomfield town limits on Sunday night was reopened at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

INDOT spokesperson Cher Goodwin told the Greene County Daily World Tuesday morning that the road was inspected by engineers prior to opening and it was deemed to be safe.

"There were no pavement failures," she stressed. "The roadway is safe."

Goodwin said there is some shoulder erosion present and work crews will be going back to address that problem.

INDOT is also making plans to repair the washed out Simpson Bridge that gave way early Monday morning on State Road 57 -- north of Prairie Chapel Church.

"We hope to have a contractor come in to that structure because of the severity of the damage to it (the culvert bridge)," Goodwin said.

Tentatively, INDOT wants to have the roadway repaired by June 27, but that will be dependent on the extent of damage that is shown after the flood waters subside, she added.

List of current INDOT road closures in the area:

Greene County

State Road 57 from SR 54/US 231 to SR 58 (Elnora)

State Road 67 from SR 54 to US 231/SR 157

State Road 157 from SR 67/US 231 (Worthington) to SR 54/US 231 (Bloomfield)

State Road 157 from SR 67/US 231 (Worthington) to SR 48.

US Route 231 (also known as SR 57) from SR 57 to SR 67

Sullivan County

State Road 154 from SR 63 (Graysville) to Illinois State Line

Daviess County

State Road 57 from US 50 (Washington) to SR 58 (Odon)

Knox County

NEW: US Route 50 from SR 550 (Wheatland) to SR 57 (Washington)

NEW: State Road 67 from SR 159 (Bicknell) to SR 358 (Edwardsport)

Knox and Daviess Counties

State Road 58 from SR 67 (Westphalia) to SR 57 (Elnora)

State Road 358 from SR 67 (Edwardsport) to SR 57 (Plainville)

Martin and Lawrence Counties

State Road 450 from US 50 (Shoals) to SR 37 (Bedford)

When encountering a flooded roadway,INDOT urges drivers to turn around and not drive through standing water. According to the National Weather Service, most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Six inches of standing water is enough to cause passenger cars to stall and a foot of water will float many vehicles.

It's odd that you refer to the highway as 54E when it's west of Bloomfield. I guess your default reference point, as always, is Linton regardless of what town you're talking about. In this case since Bloomfield is the town mentioned you should have said 54W. This is another reason why so many of us think of this as the Linton paper, not a Greene County paper.

Response by Greene County Daily World:
The reference point was the intersection of State Road 54/State Road 57-U.S. 231. The road (State Road 54) was closed east of that location, thus the SR. 54E reference.

Why does it really matter on how they word it? The important thing is that its open. Good lord people will complain about anything.

The article says "54E into Bloomfield". Would you rather it said 54W into Switz City?

What a strange thing to get angry about. I agree with Sensible, if you read it does say 54 E into Bloomfield. If they had worded it 54 W into Linton you would then be mad because they made the article about Linton. lol. I guess they can't win.

Regardless, I'm glad we can get through there now.

mks,

you must not travel much. 54E is the direction you are traveling. And from where the paper is located it would be east anyway. Just like the B.F.P states 54 west of Bloomfield, same thing with that paper. The Greene County Daily World is right.

People are without homes

People are without loved ones

People are living in shelters

People are fighting to find remains of their lives in flood waters

People from all directions

and you are talking about what ? ?

Just a side note, I suppose. Alot of people from Bloomfield refer to that section between town (Bloomfield) and the bridge as "the grade".

Glad to see things are back to normal with this "STUPID" issue about east and west AGAIN! After the storms last week, we had the whole county pulling together with offers of help and assistance to the Town of Bloomfield. That type of cooperation is what makes Greene County a great place to live and work. Our county will remain as one of the most economically disadvantaged counties in the State (roads, jobs, education, etc.) unless we work together on issues we all face. Get over the east/west thing and grow up and grow together.
