Lawmaker team blazes the course in annual Friends of Phil Harris Golf Tourney

By Nick Schneider OVERALL WINNING TEAM -- The team (from left) of John Elliott, Dennis Bane, Bill Ruppel, Matt Wolkins, David Wolkins, and Brian Elliott took top honors in winning the best overall score in the two-day Friends of Phil Harris Golf Tournament that concluded Sunday. The group had a net handicap score in the six-man scramble tournament of 52.36 on the par 71 course.

A team of golfers that include two Indiana State Representatives were the overall winners in this weekend's 29th Annual Friends of Phil Harris Golf Tournament that concluded Sunday afternoon.

The team captained by John Elliott,of Elkhart, carded a 52.36 score in the six-man handicap scramble event -- nearly 20 strokes under par.

Other team members included:District 18 State Representative David Wolkins (R-Winamac Lake); District 22 State Representative Bill Ruppel(R-North Manchester), Matt Wolkins of Winamac Lake Brian Elliott , of Elkhart and Dennis Bane of Princeton.

Par for the 6,013 yard layout is 71.

David Wolkins, Matt Wolkins, Brian Elliott, Brad Fitzpatrick and Dustin Murtaugh teamed up with former District 60 State Representative Jerry Bales of Bloomington to take top top honors during Saturday's tournament round with a 53.69 score. The score was the second overall best score of the weekend.

It was a picture-perfect weekend for golf with sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s.

Proceeds from the tournament that attracted more than 400 golfers in the two-day six-man scramble (best ball) event at the Phil Harris Golf Tournament go toward the Phil Harris Charities Fund, which provides scholarships to Linton-Stockton High School graduates. The event was held in conjunction with the Greene County Foundation Festival Weekend, which raises money for college scholarships for high school graduates from Bloomfield, White River Valley, Shakamak, Eastern Greene and Linton-Stockton high schools. The Evening with Roy Clark and Friends concert on Saturday night is the highlight of the festival weekend, which ended Sunday afternoon with a barbecued rib dinner for the entertainers and special golfing guests provided by the Greene County Foundation Roy Clark Weekend Festival Committee. Sandy Woodruff, of Linton, handed the barbecuing chores at the Linton Elks Lodge for the 18th year.
