Third teen arrested in connection with Bloomfield home burglaries

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

A third teen was arrested last week in connection with burglaries at a home in Bloomfield.

Stephen D. Kemp, 18, Bloomfield, has been charged in Greene Circuit Court with burglary, a class B felony, and theft, a class D felony.

An investigation by the Bloomfield Police Department and the Greene County Probation Department into reports of multiple burglaries and thefts at one home led to the three separate arrests.

Kemp, who had been interviewed twice before about the incidents, was taken to the Indiana State Police Post in Jasper for a polygraph test on May 15.

According to the probable cause affidavit written by Bloomfield Deputy Marshal Eric S. Smith, during the interview Kemp stated he took part in a burglary during December, 2007 with the two other teens.

The items taken during the December burglary included an X-Box game system and a pair of black Adidas shoes.

The affidavit states that the interview with Kemp was recorded and he also wrote a statement detailing his involvement - Kemp said he took the shoes and the X-box eventually was taken to his house where it was played.

The first time Kemp was interviewed about the burglaries, on March 5, he wore the stolen shoes to the Greene County Jail for the interview. At the time, he first said he did not remember where he had obtained the shoes.

In another burglary of the same residence, items taken included a grey Hollister-brand hooded zip-up jacket with the number 22 on the back of the jacket, two Hollister shirts and an LG flip cell phone.

Kemp remains in the Greene County Jail where he is being held on $18,000 bond.

He was not involved in the second burlary. He also only stole the shoes and the X-box, to me the article makes it sound like he stole the clothes and everything else. Trust me I realize this doesn't make it any better and I am extremely sorry to the family that these kids did this too, but it's not right that everyone thinks he did this awful thing to this family twice, not that he should have done it even once, but the point is that he did and now he is paying the consequences. He shouldn't have to be accused of doing something he didn't do.
