Sheriff's department adds two new deputies

Friday, May 16, 2008
The Greene County Sheriff's Department will have two new faces starting Sunday.

Brad Deckard, a former Bloomfield Deputy Town Marshal, and Bob Pierce, a current Greene County Sheriff's Department Jail Officer, were unamiously approved for hiring Thursday night by the Greene County Sheriff's Board.

The pair were selected from a pool of eight applicants, according to GCSD Chief Deputy Lt. Mike Hasler.

Deckard's last day with the Bloomfield PD will be Saturday. He has been with the department for about one year.

He will be replaced on the BPD by Jordan Hasler, the son of Mike and Rita Hasler, of rural Bloomfield.

Pierce is the 21-year-old son of Sheriff Terry Pierce and jail matron Robert Pierce. He is a White River Valley graduate and attended Vincennes University and studied law enforcement. For the last eight months he has worked as a jail officer.

The two vacancies in the sheriff's department were created by the retirement of veteran deputy Dured Townsend, who served with the GCSD for 22 years, and resignation of Jeremy Cook, who will join the Bloomington Police Department.

Townsend, of Newberry, has accepted a new job with the security department at NSWC Crane.

I am sure that they didn't get to make the decision on their own. Yet I am also not na*ve enough to believe that they got their jobs without help from their daddy's.

KUDOS to the Sheriff's Dept and the Bloomfield Police Dept for hiring who will BEST perform the job!!! Just because you have a college education doesn't mean you'll make a good officer. Years of experience doesn't necessarily mean that you'll work out well for other departments. Personally I think it's great that someone from WITHIN the jail was hired whether it was the Sheriff's son or not. I also feel like a reserve officer deserves a chance at being a full-time officer if they choose. Both of these examples show that people have an opportunity to work their way up the ladder, as it should be. So, both guys are doing what their dads do...DUH!!!! Alot of people admire their fathers and want to be like them. Who are we to criticize that??? Besides that, I'm smart enough to know that Mr. Pierce nor Mr. Hasler neither one got to make these decisions on their own. Let's support these young fellows as they set out to serve and protect this community. Remember, you might need their assistance someday!!!!!

Get over it!

Jordan Hasler has worked as a Reserve Officer for BPD for a couple of years and has as much if not more experience than most people when they are hired to a department.

Bobby Pierce will make a fine officer. He has a brother who is a Police Officer and his Dad is one of the finest guys around, let alone a top notch Police Officer.

Besides, the Sheriff's Merit Board does the hiring for the Sheriff's Department. And Bloomfield's Town Council had to approve the hiring of Jordan Hasler.

I know of two people that had their applications in there that were well qualified with college educations and experience; they never even got a call for an interview. It seems it was a "done deal" from the start. Classy. Guess the old saying is true: It isn't what you know, it's who you know!

I think the two best candidates should have been chosen, I think it is wrong that a Sheriff's son that has no experience other than being a jailer, for 8 months on job training should be hired over someone with 3 years as an Officer and the Academy. I say if people want a job they ought to have to be a Reserve somewhere to get experience first.

Agreed, It seems awful coincidental that the two newest officers, one at the BPD and one at the GCSD just happen to be the sons of the two highest ranking officers in the Sheriff's Dept. I would much rather see an officer with a little bit of life experience and age, but I guess as anywhere else in Greene County it is who your related too.

I am sure the "kid" will make a good cop, but I still believe all forms of governmental hiring should have an anti-nepotism clause.
