LPD investigation leads to another meth arrest

Friday, May 16, 2008

Following a month-long investigation led by LPD Det. Josh Goodman, a third person has been arrested in connection with a methamphetamine manufacturing operation in rural Linton.

A warrant was issued Thursday afternoon for the arrest of Levi Elkins, 18, Linton, and he was taken into custody by Linton police officers Thursday evening.

He is being held without bond.

Preliminary charges filed against Elkins in Greene Superior Court include aiding in dealing methamphetamine, a class B felony, and possession of chemical reagents or precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, a class D felony.

The investigation into Elkins' activities began in mid-April when evidence found during a search of a residence led officers to suspect he was involved in obtaining precursors for a suspected methamphetamine lab at Route 1, Box 173, Linton.

After the search on April 11, Mark E. Dickinson, 27, and Nicole L. Haldeman, 25, who both resided at the home, were arrested. Both were charged in Greene Superior Court with dealing in methamphetamine, a class B felony; possession of methamphetamine, a class D felony; possession of chemical reagents or precursors with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine, a class D felony; maintaining a common nuisance, a class D felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a class A misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavits filed in all three cases, the operation came to the attention of Linton Police Department investigators when they checked the purchasing logs at local stores for pseudoephedrine/ephedrine buyers.

A traffic stop after another purchase at a local store led to a search of a vehicle, then the house -- after the children present in the home were removed to a secure location.

Inside a bedroom, officers observed iodized salt, coffee filters, pill residue, drain cleaner, starting fluid and a glass jar with an overwhelming odor of ammonia.

Officers then waited for the Indiana State Police Meth Clandestine Lab Team to arrive due to the chemical odors in the residence.

According to the affidavit, the Clandestine Lab Team recovered the following items: A plastic bag containing numerous coffee filters with pill dough; an empty bottle of Coleman Camp Fuel, a empty quart jar with a white powder residue, an empty bottle of Grease Lightning sulfuric acid, a punched and empty can of Prestone Starting Fluid, a bag containing a glass jar with filters and a strong ammonia odor, Drager 1 pump-100% sat. Ammonia (anhydrous ammonia); rubber inner tube with modified fitting, more glass jars with residue, an empty can of Sunny SideNaphtha, more coffee filters, an empty iodized salt container, an empty bottle of Liquid Lightning Sulfuric Acid, empty lithium battery casings, empty boxes of nasal decongestants, tubing light bulbs used as pipes, and a set of digital scales.

Also during the search, officers found a receipt for pseudoephedrine/ephedrine pills that had been purchased at Wal-Mart. The receipt was found in a sack containing empty blister packs and boxes of pills as well as lithium battery striplings and packaging.

Upon checking the logs kept by Wal-Mart, officers learned that Elkins was the person who purchased the pills. He had also purchased pills on other days from Wal-Mart and from the CVS Pharmacy in Bloomfield.

According to the affidavit, surveillance video from one day at store showed Elkins and Dickinson in the store -- one purchasing pills, one purchasing lithium batteries and Coleman Camp Fuel. Video footage showed both men getting into Elkins' car upon leaving the store.

The affidavit also notes that officers had observed Elkins' car at Haldeman and Dickinson's residence a short time before officers conducted the search on April 11.

This is Levi Elkins, and i'd like to say a few things myself. First off the paper did tend to make what happened to me alot worse then it really is. Thank you to those of you that are there for me. I was never in trouble for drugs, I never made or did meth. I got into trouble because i was told a friend of mine was sick and i bought her pills only to find out in the end it was for there drug use and i was punished because of them. i was never charged with drug use. So those of you that think im into drugs, well your wrong. So getter over yourself in thinking im a bad person. Everyone makes mistakes, mine happened to be because i thought i could trust sumone who i guess i shouldnt have. The paper added what all was found at nicis trailer but never said i did or made meth so i dont see how any of you can say i did. i was basically set up. oh and by the way muggsy i lost weight because ive been running since 6th grade so if u know me or whatever then you would know that. i dont think the paper should have been allowed to mix in nici and marks case in with mine but it did and thats why everyones thinks im into drugs. well im not and thats what i have to say.

You say, "Why pray for him?"that he deserves this, he knew what he was doing. Well, A LOT of people that get drug into these things DO NOT know what they are doing! As a parent myself, I , as do many of us parents, only hope and pray ourselves that are own children do not get pulled into something like this. I have known Levi for years and he was not brought up this way, he was tought better. This is a case of someone so nieve AND NOT KNOWING WHAT HE WAS GETTING HIMSELF INTO UNTIL IT WAS TO LATE!!!! I myself and A LOT OF OTHERS will be PRAYING for LEVI and HIS FAMILY!!!!!!! God IS WITH YOU LEVI, TURN TO HIM AS YOU ALWAYS HAVE. You have a lot of support out here, WE ALL LOVE YOU!

why pray for him?? that is a loaded question. I say we should all pray for him because maybe the power of prayer will help lead him in the right direction. Levi was a very good kid..went to church had good grades and always done the right thing and was very good with his older and younger siblings... up untill about a year and a half ago..his choice in friends was his first mistake. It lead him down a bad road. I still believe he has the potential to be a good kid if he can just get his head on straight. That is why we should pray for him. Though I dont agree with his actions and believe his time in jail may be the best thing for him. I hope and pray it wakes him up.

I'm very disappointed in Levi. I went to school with him and he was always telling me about the bible and God. I can't believe he got mixed up with this stuff... I guess that is why he lost alot of weight. I hope he gets away from it!
