Van swerves to miss deer, ends up in water filled ditch

Friday, May 16, 2008
A Daviess County man swerved to miss a deer crossing the road late Thursday night and ended up in high water along State Road 57 -- just north of the State Road 54 intersection commonly known as the Lighthouse Junction.

Paul Bevers, 62, Route 2, Montgomery was southbound on U.S. 231, south of County Road 250N, about 10:30 p.m. when he saw a deer standing in the road. He swerved his 1998 Chevrolet van to miss the animal and ran off the westside of the roadway and traveled into a ditch with standing water -- caused by recent rains, according to Greene County Sheriff's Department Deputy Jeremy Inman.

Water came into the passenger side of the van, but Bevers was able to exit the vehicle before the water got high inside the vehicle, a report by Deputy Inman stated.

He was not injured.

Assisting at the scene was Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce and personnel from the Bloomfield Police Department assisted with traffic control.
