Hancock, Utt face charges following traffic stop

Thursday, May 15, 2008

After a Linton police officer stopped a pickup truck for speeding through town on State Road 54 on Wednesday night, two Linton residents wound up in jail.

Ashley Hancock, 23, and Billy J. Utt, 27, are facing a number of criminal charges.

The preliminary charges filed Thursday against Hancock include battery upon a police officer, a class D felony; resisting law enforcement, a class A misdemeanor; and public intoxication, a class B misdemeanor.

The preliminary charges filed Thursday against Utt include possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, and driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor.

Their troubles began around 11:39 p.m. on Wednesday when LPD Cpl. Chad E. Crynes clocked a pickup truck traveling west on S.R. 54 near 9th St. NW at 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. After activating his lights to make a stop, the vehicle turned south onto 6th St. NW then west into an alley before stopping.

Utt was the driver and Hancock was a passenger in the truck.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Superior Court, Hancock appeared to be intoxicated and refused to cooperate with the officer when he requested she remain in the truck. She exited the vehicle and walked toward the officer in an aggressive manner, yelling and screaming.

Hancock was placed under arrest and became combative with LPD Officers Paul Clark and Heath Murray who had both arrived on the scene to assist. During the attempt to place Hancock in the back of a squad car, the affidavit states she kicked Murray in the leg.

Utt was placed under arrest after a check revealed his driver's license was suspended and he had a prior conviction for driving while suspended.

Both were transported to the Greene County Jail.

A search on Utt during the booking process at the jail turned up three pills in his possession which were identified by Indiana Poison Control as Xanax, a Schedule IV Controlled Substance. The affidavit states that Utt said he did not have a prescription for Xanax.

Hancock's bond was set at $5,500 and Utt's bond was set at $5,000.
