The annual event raises money for the American Cancer Society and is a celebration of life.
"The theory is to walk for 24 hours in celebration of those who have survived cancer and continue to fight back against cancer," said Nicole Cox, who is the local event chairperson.
Another goal of the event is to continue to grow, she noted.
"We have 18 registered teams up from 11 teams last year," Cox said. "Things are going well. We've raised over $17,000 so far."
This year's goal is set at $35,000. Last year the event raised $29,000.
This year also has Bloomfield hosting the event for the first time. Both the town of Worthington and White River Valley High School have hosted it in the past.
"We needed something to spark involvement ... and have more participation. It's a way to make it bigger and better," Cox said, referring to the move.
"The goal is to really make it grow."
But it's a combination of county-wide teams participating in the event, she said.
If you're not up for walking you can still attend.
"We'll have lots of entertainment," Cox said.
Seven food vendors and 11 local merchants will also be on hand.
"It's a celebration of life. They can come out and enjoy the entertainment and see what it's all about," Cox said. "We've had wonderful community support from everyone ... It's looking great. I think the weather is going to be good."
The event also includes:
* 6 p.m., Friday -- Opening ceremony.
* 9 a.m., Saturday -- Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders.
* 8 - 10 a.m., Saturday -- WWBL "The Bullet" 106.5 FM.
* 24 hours straight -- Local deejay Todd Landis.
gcreader,
Information about the Relay for Life has been in the papers for months. All you have to do is contact any of the local folks involved and I am sure they can find something for you to do! It's not too late........
What is really sad.....I contacted the ACS about 5-6 months ago to volunteer. I was told they would pass my contact information on the local ACS chapters and I NEVER HEARD a word from any of them.
