Richland-Taylor Township Fire and Rescue Chief Randy Baker said his department asked for the assistance from the state fire marshal in trying to determine what ignited a blaze at the mobile home owned by William Akers, Route 1, Box 72A-3, Bloomfield.
The investigator's assessment was inconclusive.
A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the structure and alerted the Greene County Sheriff's Department dispatch center at 11:02 a.m., according to Baker.
No one was at home when the fire broke out. Akers was at work in Linton, according to Baker.
Richland-Taylor F.D. received mutual aid assistance from Bloomfield and Eastern Greene fire departments. Also assisting at the scene was a deputy from the Greene County Sheriff's Department, personnel from the Greene County Ambulance and Paramedic Service as well as crews from Eastern Heights Utilities and the Utilities District of Western Indiana REMC.
Baker said the fire was brought under control in about an hour, but some crews remained on the scene until about 4 p.m. -- when the fire investigator had concluded looking over the scene.
The interior of the "older" model structure was gutted by the blaze.
Speaking of the fire, which is believed to have started in the bedroom/bathroom areas of the mobile home, Baker said nothing appeared to be suspicious. However, the state investigator was called to assist the local fire department in determining the cause.
"(It was done) Just to cover us (the fire department). Sometimes we do it," Baker said. "It (the cause) could have been anything with an old house (mobile home) like that."
