May misses perfect game, throws no-hitter

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Shakamak senior Jaret May just missed a perfect game, but settled for a no-hitter as the Lakers blanked visiting White River Valley 11-0 in five innings in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference baseball game at Jasonville Tuesday night.

"Jaret was one batter from pitching a perfect game," said Shakamak coach Matt Fougerousse. "There was two outs in the fifth when he hit (Clay) Rollings in the back. He got the next guy to ground out to finish the no-hitter.

"He struck out nine and hit just the one batter. It was his best game of the year and his first decision, although he has started a couple of games and has a couple of saves. His ball was really moving."

May helped his own cause with a two-run homer in the five-run third inning. He finished with two hits, including a double, and the two RBIs.

Ben Grissom hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot. Billy Newton connected on a two-run home run and finished with three RBIs.

Justin Cox was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Timothy Betts and John Smith both contributed one hit and Betts was credited for an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

"We did a good job getting nine hits," said Fougerousse. "We have some guys that are seeing the ball well right now.

"Hopefully it will continue."

Jeremy Roberts was the starting and losing pitcher for WRV. Tyler Zimmerly came into relief in the third.

Shakamak, who improved to 16-5 overall, 4-2 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference, will play at make-up game today at Bloomfield. They will play at Bedford North Lawrence Thursday.

WRV will play at Linton-Stockton today.

from the looks of things, coach Karr has done an outstanding job with the team this season, he needs to work on his reporting skills to the paper, lol, but it looks like the team is in lot better hands than seasons past

and once again, problems within the team, should remain within the team, and not in a public forum where the kids do read the stories and all the negative comments!!!!!

When you say they play with no heart, how is that not running them down? You also once before stated that the coach was afraid the jv would show up his team (after the eastern game). How is this supporting the wrv baseball team? Coach Karr just doesn't cancel games for fun, have you checked out the weather lately? SWIAC games will take precedence over a jv game to be made-up. Also once again our jv coach will report on his games. Don't put down the varsity coach just because you don't approve of the way he coaches. He has gotten more out of these boys than in previous years. Maybe you should submit your resume for next year.

First of all WRV sports fan, the home team is responsible for reporting the game, and if the jv isn't reported on, then tell your jv coach about it. Furthermore quit insulting the varsity team, just because your child didn't make the cut for varsity. It is a team sport and if your child is going to participate in athletics then you should fully support every athlete regardless if it's jv or varsity.
