Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell gave his recommendation on the matter during the Linton City Council meeting Monday night.
The traffic violation ordinance has not been updated since the early 1980s, Jerrell said.
Currently, the fine for speeding and disregarding a stop sign is $25.
"I recommend to raise it to $85," Jerrell said, noting that the state statute is $118.
He also recommended that parking fines be raised from $5 to $15 and accident form reports increase from $5 to $10.
The city currently has no code for one-way streets, he noted.
With 10th St. and the school property both being one-way an ordinance is needed to control the current problems, Jerrell said.
He also suggested that the current noise ordinance be updated to include loud exhaust volumes. The noise ordinance currently covers stereo noise levels only.
Jerrell also requested that city attorney Tim Shonk update the four-wheeler ordinance to include mandatory safety gear.
He also reminded the public of the current city ordinance on four-wheelers.
To legally drive a four-wheeler in town one must be 18 years of age, registered and insured, Jerrell said. Four-wheelers can only be driven on side streets, county roads and across the highway at 90 degree angles.
Drivers must also wear safety helmets, he added.
In other business, updates on the recent Pre-Pride Day and Farmer's Market opening were given.
Pre-Pride Day was a success, according to Tim Turpen, Linton's street and sanitation supervisor.
"It really did make a difference. We're still planning Pride Day in June, but we don't have a date set yet."
Soon to come will be mosquito spraying, he added.
"We'll start spraying on Memorial Day. The schedule will be in the paper," he added.
In other business, John Danner provided a brief update on the Farmer's Market.
Saturday was the market's first day, he said. The one paying vendor was a no show.
"It's early and the ground is still wet," he added.

I would like to see where the money from whatever tickets written now goes. Also, I would like to see where the future money goes and the difference once the fines raise.
When will the police...if ever...start enforcing the 4 wheeler law?
Linton Police could write a boat load of tickets if they would patrol the stretch of E street N.E. from 4th (Catholic Church) and E East to the park/pool. People seem to use this stretch as a bypass of hwy 54. My neighbors and I have witnessed vehicles traveling in excess of 45 mph or above. The stop signs on the four way stops located on 4th, 9th and 11th and E n.e. are ran on a daily basis. Also vehicles approaching E from the side streets that have the stop sign do not stop half the time. ATV's (apparently without mufflers) speed through this stretch constantly also. After having a near miss with someone running a stop sign on 5/12 I sat outside last night and observed the 4 way stop on 4th and E. 21 cars did not stop (this was in a span of about half an hour.) When I watched the 4 way stop on 9th and E 7 cars ran the stop. One was a police car (couldn't tell who) who slowed but did not stop.
I would like to see a report in the newspaper on the number of tickets written for different reasons by each individual officer. It seems that some or all are not doing their job....maybe they would like to look for another one?
There are many laws that aren't enforced, or aren't regularly enforced. Thank the LPD for that one. I was of the impression that once we got a new mayor, we'd have a better police department. We got a new chief, but nothing has changed as far as the actual job of law enforcement.
How about instead of hiring anyone that decides they want to be a cop that day, recruiting some of the kids that go away to college to be cops, but choose to work in (and live in) other towns after graduating?
America...I don't think I'm whining. In my post I presented a problem that obviously isn't being addressed. I did not say they weren't doing a good job on other things. They in all have done an excellent job for our city. If you would like, sit along E Street N.E. and see for yourself all the traffic violations that occur there. If we have a problem there is nothing wrong with notifying the police of the situation. That's what they are there for. You say it's one of us that you hope gets fined, I pray to God is not you or one of your family that get's hurt, by one of these motorists I mentioned below.
america…I think you need to get a new username because yours sounds awfully pretentious all of a sudden! You think people are Nazis because they want the laws of the United States to be obeyed and enforced, and their neighborhoods to be safe?? You think people have the civil liberties to run stop signs and speed down city streets? Sounds pretty LIBERAL to me! Your comments are hypocritical and ridiculous! Maybe it would be "reasonable and prudent" for you to go back to Obama-bashing on someone else's blog!
I could probably talk to the tree in my yard and have a more intelligent conversation than talking to you A...
