Speaking for the fire department, Assistant Chief Darren Sluder informed the council that some fire chiefs and cities have been blamed for deaths because equipment wasn't tested or firemen weren't given physicals.
Sluder said he realized that there have been budget cuts; however fire departments could have lawsuits filed against them.
Sluder also said the city should be looking for ways to purchase a new fire truck. Matt Sward from SIDC said a grant of $150,000 with a 10 percent match might be available.
The council took the information under consideration and decided to wait until 2009 to even think about applying for a grant.
Right now we don't have a confirmed budget," noted Mayor Roy Terrell. "It will probably be August or September before we know what it will be."
Sluder also reported that an Army truck was donated to the department and will replace the old brush truck.
In other business, Terrell read a contract for 911 re-addressing.
No decision was made to the discrepancy in the number of residences to be re-addressed.
After reviewing three bids for mosquito control, the board voted to hire Action Control of Washington, Ind. for $1,900 a month.
After Attorney Jeff Hawkins presented map of an alley on Salust Street that Casey's requested closed, the board announced a special meeting on that decision to be held at 7 p.m. on June 2. The public is invited.
Clerk-Treasurer Charlotte Thomas reported that she attended a hearing at the Greene County Court House and it is estimated that Jasonville's budget would be cut 24 percent for 2008.
Police Chief Rick Van Horn reported a total of 13 arrests in April.
Fire Chief Harold Keller reported that the fire department made 13 runs.
Keller reported that the street department had cleaned culverts and ditches and also repaired some of the streets.
Councilman Brad Duncan announced that the Chamber of Commerce would be sponsoring a special dinner for MSD of Shakamak's junior and senior class at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Lions Club.
Duncan also reported that there would be a meeting at 7 p.m. on May 20 at the Lions Club to plan the anniversary celebration of Jasonville
"We certainly need help," Duncan said. "There were only a few people at the last meeting.
In other business, the council:
*Announced that spring cleanup would be May 14 and 15 and until noon on May 16.
*Anounced that the Tri County Festival would be held May 28-31 and a carnival would be on the grounds every day of the festival.
*Granted application for a mobile home on South Levy Street.
Don't mean to be critical but a couple of things that should be corrected in this article is that Jasonville has a city council instead of a town council.
The street that attorney Hawkins is referring to with the Casey project is Salust St. instead of Select St.
Just wanted clear this up....thanks!
