High winds keep people busy Sunday

Monday, May 12, 2008

Sunday was anything but a relaxing Mother's Day with family members for area highway and street department workers as well as electrical power company crews and fire department personnel.

High winds -- fueled by a strong low pressure system -- downed numerous trees, limbs and power lines. Some county roads were also closed temporarily until clean-up crews removed debris from the roadways.

No injuries were reported, but structural damage was done to a couple of homes on Lester and South Seminary streets in Bloomfield when trees toppled onto them or struck power lines.

Winds with gusts that topped 50 mph reportedly hit Greene and surrounding counties, according to Terre Haute television weatherman Dan Reynolds.

"Deep low pressure moved over the Wabash Valley dropping barometric pressure to a low of 29.116 inches at 6 a.m. (Sunday) -- one of the lowest readings ever," the WTWO-TV meteorologist said.

Greene County Highway Superintendent Basil Shepherd reported that he had six workman out on the roads for more than six hours Sunday cleaning up the mess from the storm.

The damage was county wide.

"It was all over the place. It wasn't in just one part of the county," Shepherd told the Greene County Daily World on Monday.

The Greene County Sheriff's Department took 28 calls Sunday reporting downed limbs and trees in roadways.

The major problem areas, according to Shepherd, included:

* County Road 400N

* County Road 1100W

* County Road 1000W, south of State Road 48.

* County Road 450E, near County Road 700N.

* County Road 550E and County Road 420N.

* Washboard Road near County Road 840E.

* County Road 340E, north of County Road 625N.

* County Road 710S, west of Mt. Nebo Church.

* County Road 3401, north of County Road 625N.

* County Road 875E and County Road 900E.

* County Road 360E and County Road 325N.

* County Road 400S and County Road 280N.

* County Road 700N and County Road 450N.

Angeline Protogere, who serves as Duke Energy's Indiana Media Relations spokesperson, says her company had about 1,000 scattered customer outages in the Bedford Region, which includes Bloomfield and Jasonville.

She said the hardest hit areas in the region were in Odon and Loogootee.

As of late Monday morning, service had been restored to all but three Duke Energy customers in the Bedford Region.
