Country music legend Roy Clark and an array of his talented musical friends will gather in Linton later this month for another memorable night of entertainment and two days of golf.

The Greene County Foundation will present the yearly Roy Clark and Friends benefit show, which raises scholarship money for local high school graduates, at 7 p.m. on May 31 at the Linton-Stockton High School gymnasium.

This is the 29th anniversary of the benefit festival, which began as the Phil Harris Scholarship Festival and continued after his death as the Greene County Foundation Festival, headlined by Roy Clark.

A guest of the late Phil Harris, a native of Linton who founded the show, Clark first performed with his long-time friend in Linton at the annual scholarship festival in 1981. Clark once again entertained the Greene County crowd in 1996. He has been returned every year since 1998 to headline the show.

Over the years the show has raised thousands of dollars in scholarship money for county students.

Clark, who has garnered every award the music industry gives -- including a Grammy, "Entertainer of the Year" and "Instrumentalist of the Year" -- doesn't mince words when he talks about the genuine love and kinship he possesses for the Greene County community.

"It's just as close to coming and doing something that takes little or no effort because the people are so supportive of the whole scholarship fund, what we do for the young people, and it's a chance for us to help out. There are no strangers here (in Linton). Everybody here is a friend and through the years this is as close to a family reunion as you can get without being blood kin," Clark said.

For two-and-a-half decades, Clark co-hosted "Hee Haw" -- the longest syndicated show in TV history. He had a reoccurring role on "The Beverly Hillbillies" as Cousin Roy and guest appearances on "The Muppet Show," "Drew Carey Show" and even as guest host for Johnny Carson on "The Tonight Show."

Clark is an gifted musician whose talent has taken him all over the world. He knows music can bridge continents and has taken his message of goodwill to many countries.

In 1976 he led his own show to Russia.

This is the Foundation's only fund raiser. Proceeds from the weekend's events fund scholarships for Greene County high schools and the foundation's endowment. Over the years the show has raised thousands of dollars in scholarship money for county students. The Endowment is a source of funds making grants to worthy charitable organizations and projects within Greene County.

In the past 29 years, such greats as Randy Carmichael, Boots Randolph, Peter Marshall, Jimmy Dean, Kit Carson and George "Goober" Lindsay have performed on the festival stage.

Clark and his talented band, along with Justin David and his band, will headline this year's star-studded show of professional performers.

Go go Justin David's website at http://www.justindavidmusic.com/ to hear his music.

Two new first time performers -- John Adam Murph and Heather Myles have been booked for the show.

Other "regulars" on the show making a return visit this year to the Linton show will be sing-songwrtier Wayne Carson, as well as Grand Ole Opry performers Jan Howard and Jerry Chesnut.

Linton's own Jack Shelton and his band will open the night with some "Big Band" turns with Shelton, who serves as the city of Linton's clerk-treasurer, featured on the trumpet.

Comedian Woody Woodbury will again serve as emcee.

Tickets for this "Branson" caliber show are still available on a first come, first serve basis with plenty of good seats left, according to ticket manager Kathy Matthews.

Floor seats are $24, reserved bleacher seats (rows 2-6), $14 and general admission bleacher seats $10.

Tickets are available at Francis' Jewell Box at 145 N. Main Street in Linton.

Greene County Foundation Executive Director Kerry Conway reminds everyone that it's important to indicate with the ticket order which scholarship fund you wish to have your ticket purchase credited -- Bloomfield, Eastern Greene, Linton-Stockton, Shakamak, White River Valley, Greene County Youth Alternatives or the Greene County Foundation Development Fund.

Walk-ins for ticket purchases are welcome during business hours Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday 9 a.m. to noon; Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Francis said.

Tickets can also be obtained by mail at Roy Clark Show Tickets, 145 North Main Street, Linton, Ind., 47441 or by phone at (800) 299-7445 or 847-9950.

Please make checks payable to the Greene County Foundation and include $2 processing fee, per order.

Conway pointed out that logistically, an effort is being made to improve the lighting and sound for the show by putting the speakers and lighting mounts up off of the floor, which will also make more quality seating available.

Sales will be credited to the Foundation's General Fund unless a Greene County high school is designated.

The Roy Clark and Friends show is the highlight and the kickoff event for Linton's "34 Days of June" celebration that culminates July 4 with the state's largest Independence Day parade.

Besides the Roy Clark Show, the festival includes the Friends of Phil Harris Golf Tourney on Saturday and Sunday.

Questions concerning the golf tournament, either participants or spectators, can call Bart Beard at 847-4790.

On Friday, May 30 the performers and community members will gather for the annual Greene County Shrine Celebrity Dinner. The event generally features a "sneak preview" of the entertainment and fellowship with the performers

Contact John Wilkes at (812) 847-7966 for details about the event.

Tickets are still available at $75 a couple.

Tours are also available of the Phil Harris/Alice Faye Collection by appointment. Call the Greene County Foundation Office at 659-3142 to schedule times.
