Softball sectional pairings announced

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Pairings for the Class A Clay City Class 2A South Knox Sectionals were announced Thursday morning by the Indiana High School Athletic Association in Indianapolis.

At Clay City, White River Valley and Shakamak will square off in game one, while Union (Dugger) and Clay City will battle in game two. North Central received the bye and will play the winner of game one.

Although Clay City athletic director Chris Ross was unavailable to verify the exact dates because Clay City Schools were not in session today, WRV and Shakamak will likely play a single game on Monday, May 19.

The semifinals, including Union (Dugger) against Clay City and along with North Central against the winner of game 1, will more than likely be Tuesday, May 20.

The title game will either be Wednesday, May 21 or Thursday, May 22.

At the Class 2A South Knox Sectional, the host Lady Spartans will take only county rival North Knox at 6 p.m. Monday, May 19.

On Tuesday, May 20, Bloomfield will play Eastern Greene in the first game at 5:30 p.m.

The second semifinal May 20 will feature Linton-Stockton facing the winner of the South Knox-North Knox game at 7:30 p.m.

The championship game is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21.

South Knox is the defending champion, having beaten Linton-Stockton 4-1 in the championship game.

Regional play is set for Saturday, May 31.

The Class A sectional figures to play out as one of the toughest in the state. The LadyBirds and host Eels are No. 7 and No. 8 in the latest state polls, but neither team would be considered a clear favorite to advance beyond sectional play. All five teams have suffered at least one loss against another team in the sectional.

One certainty in each game will be top notch pitching. The ace of each county staff has had record breaking performances throughout the season.

Heather Gilbert of Shakamak and Stephanie Fougerousse of WRV have both tossed multiple no-hitters this season, while Union (Dugger) ace Ashli Scott has proven to be a strikeout machine. The freshman set a new Bulldog record with 27 punch-outs in a single game, earlier this season against Bloomfield.

Depth might be deciding factor in game one between the Lady Wolverines and Lady Lakers, as WRV will be down to only 10 players on their sectional roster, with only Fougerousse with experience inside the circle this season.

The game one winner will also have the toughest route to take to hoisting the championship trophy, as it will take three games to win from their side of the bracket.

"If you are going to get a bad draw, that is definitely it," Lady Wolverines coach Ruan Fougerousse said. "But if we escape and win it all, there will not be any doubt that we were the best team."

All three coaches was under the same assumption that any one team could beat another and any given night.

"It didn't really matter who we play, we know that anyone can win and we are all pretty even keel," Lady Laker coach Paige Wolf said. "I am happy with the way we are playing right now so hopefully we can go in with some confidence."

"At this stage it is pretty much luck of the draw," Fougerousse said. "One advantage of playing the extra game, may be that you have one game to get the opening-round jitters out of the way."

One team that was really pleased with the way the draw turned out was Union (Dugger). The Lady Bulldogs will have revenge on their minds when they battle the host Eels in the first semifinal contest. Clay City came away with a 5-4 victory in their meeting on April 28.

"We were happy with the draw we got, we wanted to play Clay City again," Lady Bulldog coach Rick Swan said. "They were the only team in our sectional that we have not beat."

Union (Dugger) will have plenty of time to prepare for the Lady Eels as their last scheduled game is this Saturday, which will be at least a week and a half before they play Clay City.

"The time off could be a good thing and it could also be a bad thing," Swan said. "We will have plenty of time to rest up if we don't get another game scheduled next week, but then the girls don't like all that practice either."

Clay City is the defending Class A champions with a 1-0 15-inning marathon win over White River Valley last season in the title game.

The South Knox Sectional champ will compete at the Forest Park Regional while the sectional winner at Clay City will play at the Franklin Central Regional.

The state semifinals (Final Four) are scheduled for Friday, June 6 at four different sites in the Indianapolis area for the four classes.

The state championship games will be at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis Saturday, June. 7.
