Concerts will help dream become reality

Thursday, May 8, 2008

Fans of old-time gospel music are in for a treat when the Good Twins arrive to give a series of free area concerts to benefit the Vern R. Reed Memorial Prayer Chapel at Open Arms Christian Ministries.

Dwight and Dwayne Good will travel from Branson, Mo., for six concerts, May 12-18. Admission is free and the public is invited.

A free-will love offering will be taken at the conclusion of each event with all proceeds to benefit the construction fund of a new chapel on the Open Arms campus located east of Switz City on State Road 54.

Tracy Lady, marketing associate at Open Arms, said the Good Twins perform regular benefits for several ministries and they have done some in the past for Open Arms.

"Dwight and Dwayne were good friends of Vern and we're thrilled they are coming to help make his dream a reality. Going to one of their concerts is like going to a little revival. They are inspirational and they always leave you with an uplifting feeling," said Lady.

A concert by the Good Twins will likely include some storytelling and a few jokes as well as toe-tapping gospel tunes and old favorites like "The Old Rugged Cross."

Lady said the staff of Open Arms and Reed's family started working on the building project shortly after Reed passed away unexpectedly last fall.

"A request was made for chapel funds in lieu of flowers in memory of Vern and so far, $10,000 has been donated toward the project," said Lady.

Reed was the Director and Administrator of Open Arms Christian Ministries.

"This was always a dream of Vern's and it was one of his goals for 2008 -- to have a prayer chapel as the central focus of the Open Arms campus. He wanted to build it between the office building and the Miriam Home," said Lady.

Misty Hunt, who serves as the Administrator of the Turning Points Education Center on the Open Arms campus, estimated it will take approximately $20,000 to build the new chapel.

"Funds are needed to buy materials but we'll rely on volunteer labor during the construction. It will be a small one-room chapel about 24 feet by 26 feet, a quiet place open to the Open Arms staff, residents and students attending Turning Points" said Hunt.

The chapel may also be available to community churches for hosting weddings and other small events and Hunt says the staff is planning for the chapel to be open during daytime hours as a place for the public to stop in for moments of quiet prayer.

"Vern's goal is now our goal -- to complete the chapel in 2008. We're planning a dedication ceremony when it's finished and we hope the Good Twins will come back and perform again on that special day," said Hunt.
