JASONVILLE -- Shakamak's Kristi Pearson slides safely into home plate during the first inning of the Lady Lakers 10-0 win over Eminence here Tuesday. The game marked the first time the Lady Lakers have played on their new field this season. (By Travis David/Greene County Daily World).

JASONVILLE -- The first game for the Shakamak softball team on their new field was delayed nearly an hour, but the end result was well worth the wait. The Lady Lakers disposed of visiting Eminence 10-0 in five innings here Tuesday in a Tri-River Conference game.

Casey Fougerousse led off the home half of the first inning with a base on balls, then would score the first run on the new field on a sacrifice fly by Annie Strahla.

It was only fitting that a senior knocked in the first run as another senior earned the win. Heather Gilbert tossed a perfect game, as she did not allow a base runner for the game earning her eleventh win on the season. Both seniors were held hitless at the dish, but Gilbert did not need much offensive support.

The ace fanned nine batters for the game, and only two balls were hit out of the infield.

"Heather has been putting a lot of pressure on herself here lately, but tonight she was able to just go out there relaxed and needless to say she pitched a great game," Lady Laker coach Paige Wolf said. "I thought that her velocity was a lot better tonight and she threw a lot of strikes. It doesn't matter who she is facing, when she throws like that she would be tough to beat."

Keshia Deschamp had the first hit on the new field, with an RBI infield single in the six-run first inning. Deschamp would add another RBI single in the second inning to help Shakamak extend their lead to 7-0 after two innings.

"Coach just told us to go to the plate and try and pitch out a good pitch and not swing at anything too bad," Deschamp said of facing a slower pitcher. "She told us just keep our eye on the ball and our head down since we are used to facing faster pitchers. Its a lot harder against a slower pitcher and its tougher to hold back."

The Lakers (13-4, 3-2 TRC) scored their 10 runs on only seven hits, but took advantage of seven free passes and four Lady Eel errors.

Kristi Pearson had a pair of singles and was credited with an RBI, while Marki Collins had the only extra base hit of the game with a ringing two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and also added a single.

Kelsey Farris was credited with an RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Amanda Gilbert added a single in the win.

"I was happy for our two seniors that they were able to finally get to play on the field and this was a good way to break the field in," Wolf said. "There have been a lot of volunteer work put into this field to make it possible to play on. I just told the girls tonight to be aggressive at the plate."

Wolf mentioned that although the field was not 100 percent finished, due to the possibility of inclement weather upcoming, they wanted to play this game on the field to ensure the seniors of playing at least one game on the new field.

"This was just great to finally be able to experience a new field after four years," Strahla said. "This was one of those games were we could really just work on our hitting and knowing when to swing and when not to. It's really hard to make the adjustment from going to a fast pitcher one night to a slow pitcher the next night, but its just part of it."

Shakamak will be back in action on the diamond Thursday when they play host to Cloverdale.

I'm so happy the seniors had the opportunity to play on the new field. I'm just sorry they didn't have more chances.
