Cards cant overcome errors

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

The Bloomfield Cardinals suffered a tough 4-2 loss Tuesday on the road at Washington in a non-conference high school baseball game.

With the loss, the young Cardinals fall to 3-14 on the season.

The host team tallied two runs in the home half of the fifth inning to reclaim a one-run lead then added an insurance run in the sixth inning for the final score.

"This was a tough loss to swallow. We had this game until the fifth inning," Cardinal coach Jason Pegg said. "I felt like we gave this game away tonight."

Bloomfield committed five errors in the field and the eventual game-winner was a result of one of the errors.

Ben Montgomery was the starting and losing pitcher for the Cardinals. The freshman gave up two earned runs struck out one batter and walked two.

"Ben pitched an outstanding game tonight," Pegg said. "Its just unfortunate that we just didn't make enough plays in both the field and at the plate to help him get the win."

Pegg noted that he feels that some of the kids are carrying some of their mental lapses from the field into their plate appearances.

"We are just having some mental lapses out there and I really think that some are carrying that with them when they go up to the plate. We got a solid pitching effort tonight, but just wasn't able to get on the same page defensively and at the plate. Once we get everything together on the same night we will be OK."

Payton Karl had the lone extra base hit on the game for the Cardinals with a two-bagger. Cody Pearson, Cody Barlow and Bryce Helms each added a base hit in the loss.

The Cards will return to the diamond on Thursday when they play host to Shakamak in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference contest.
