Union (Dugger) knocks off WRV

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

White River Valley rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the seventh, but host Union (Dugger) came up with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull out a 5-4 victory in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference softball game at Dugger Tuesday.

"This was a really good ball game," said Union (Dugger) coach Rick Swan, whose Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-6, 2-4 in the SWIAC. "It was a pitcher's duel until the seventh inning.

"WRV is a good team and they are well coached. They are hard to beat. This was a good win for us."

WRV sophomore Stephanie Fougerousse hit a homer, with Jenna Rollins aboard, to put the Lady Wolverines ahead.

"We decided to pitch to Fougerousse a little bit," said Swan. "We did in the seventh and she hit a shot over the fence in dead center field.

"She is an excellent pitcher and a very dangerous hitter."

Winning pitcher Ashli Scott and Megan Gambill each singled in the seventh for the Lady Bulldogs. After Tawni McKim was Fougerousse's 10th strikeout victim for the second out of the inning, Cassie Parr tripled in both runners to tie the game at 4-all.

Parr finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

"Cassie really hit the ball well," said Swan. "Some of the girls hit Steph and others did not.

"But I know we can hit the ball."

Then Jessica Fettig singled in Parr with the game-winning run."We really had some timely hits, especially in the seventh," said Swan. "Jessica really came through for us in a tough situation.

"With both of us being sectional teams, this was a big win. It just goes to show you how tough our sectional is and how tough it is going to be. There is really no favorite as all the teams are very competitive."

Aedria Swan went 2-for-3 for the Lady Bulldogs.

DeLaney Sanders and Alicia Tally each had base hits for the Lady Wolverines, who slipped to 9-6. Fougerousse walked four to go with her 10 Ks. She allowed eight hits and suffered the loss.

Ashli Scott was the winning pitcher, as she scattered five hits. She finished with eight strikeouts and four walks. Her record improved to 7-6.

WRV will host Loogootee Thursday before facing Linton-Stockton, Southridge and host Evansville Central in an invitational Saturday.

Union (Dugger) will play its final SWIAC game Thursday at Eastern Greene.
