Lady Miners rally in seventh

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Izzy Carpenter's hit to center field drove in pinch-runner Kelsey Overton with the game's only run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Linton-Stockton defeated visiting Cloverdale 1-0 in a high school softball game Tuesday.

"We challenged the girls to do what we needed to go to get a run across in the seventh," said Linton-Stockton coach Jill Flater. "They really stepped up to the challenge and came through.

"I couldn't be happier for all the girls."

Megan Barnes started the Lady Miner seventh with a base hit and exited for Overton. Kylie Niebrugge, who had one of the six Lady Miner hits, tried to sacrifice Overton but Cloverdale committed an error, leaving Linton-Stockton with two runners on base.

After Brittany Rehmel flew out and Cortney Astleford popped out, Carpenter, batting in the lead-off position, came through with the game-winner for the Lady Miners, who improved to 9-8.

Carpenter had two hits as did Barnes. Catcher Hali Murray also singled.

"Kylie has two really nice bunts," said Flater.

Carpenter allowed only four hits to earn her ninth win in 15 decisions. The junior finished with seven Ks and no walks.

"Izzy did another excellent job on the mound," said Flater. "She has been very focused mentally and prepared to pitch.

"She is showing her mental toughness, whether it is to get a strikeout or to get a girl to hit the ball and let our defense make plays behind her. She gave up just four hits and did an excellent job."

The Lady Miners JV won 2-0, their ninth win in 10 games. Ashley Stetter pitched one-hitter and scored one run. Dani Kent scored the other run.

The Lady Miners will play at Terre Haute South Thursday before hosting West Vigo Friday in a varsity-only game.

The varsity will play White River Valley, Southridge and host Evansville Central in a round-robin invitational Saturday starting at 9:30 a.m.

"We play six games in four calendar days. This was a good way to start off the week," said Flater.

"I look for the girls to continue to come around. We want to keep going in the right direction."
