Eastern Greene tops Wolverines

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Eastern Greene scored six runs in the sixth inning to salt away an 8-0 victory over visiting White River Valley in a Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference baseball game Tuesday.

It was the 11th victory in 16 games for the Thunderbirds. They are 4-0 in league play.

WRV slipped to 5-8.

"We came out a little flat," said Eastern Greene coach Brad Bates. "We tried to get the jump on them earlier, but we hit the ball right at them. Our bats finally woke up in the sixth with some insurance runs.

"But you have to give WRV credit. They were making a lot of good plays in the field. It was just a 2-0 game into the sixth. In the past, the score might have gotten away from them. But coach (Mike) Karr has really done a good job of turning those kids around. They played really well. They hit the ball pretty well and their overall attitude was really good."

Ryan Wilcoxen was the winning pitcher, raising his record to 7-1. He pitched the first six innings. Eric McArtor came in and pitched the seventh to preserve the shutout.

Wilcoxen helped himself with a double and Orry Miller had a home run. Josh Avooske was 3-for-4.

Briar Sparks was the starting and losing pitcher. He tossed five innings.

The Thunderbirds will play Orleans at home Thursday before playing at Shoals Friday.

WRV will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Linton-Stockton.

it sure would be nice to have some jv articles once in awhile,I forgot our varsity coach dont think enough of those hard working boys to say anything.I think hes afraid they will show his team up if they actually had some real 7 inning games to play instead of nonstop cancelling them when teams want to play.
