Lady Miners win second match

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

The Linton-Stockton girls tennis team picked up its second victory of the season, defeating visiting South Knox 4-1 at the Linton City Park Tuesday.

"It was a very hard-fought match," said Linton-Stockton coach Brad McKinney. "They area a good club and going to get even better. They don't have any seniors.

"They have done things the right way, starting with junior high and playing junior varsity before they were ready to move up to the varsity. They have done a nice job. They are pretty talented."

Senior Lauren Karazsia won at No. 1 singles in spite of losing the second set at love.

Classmate Megan Sparks lost in two close sets at No. 3 singles.

The senior duo of Ashley Sparks and Jessy Yuodzukinas rallied from a set down to win in three at No. 1 doubles.

"This was a nice match for our seniors," said McKinney. "They played their final match at home.

"It was big for us to win on their senior night. Two of our three wins came from seniors. That was very nice to see."

The Lady Miners improved to 2-8.

"This was a much-needed win," said McKinney. "We really needed a win for our confidence level heading in the conference tournament this weekend."

Olivia Wells and Sarah Hensley teamed up for the other Lady Miners point by winning at No. 2 doubles.

"The group that won the easiest was Olivia and Sarah at two doubles," said McKinney. "They have really struggled, but they did not play anything like that tonight.

"Mentally this was a good performance for us. We realize that we can dig back and get into a match. The girls showed a lot of determination tonight. I was really proud of the way they responded."

The Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference tournament will be Friday and Saturday at North Daviess.
