Maesch approved as boys basketball coach at Northview High School

ERNIE MAESCH
Ernie Maesch, a 1990 Northview High School graduate is returning home.

Maesch, who has served the past five seasons as boys basketball coach at Shakamak High School, has accepted a similar position at his alma mater.

He was approved by Clay Community School Corporation's board of trustees Thursday night in a special session.

Maesch had a 78-40 record in five seasons at Shakamak. He guided the Lakers to two sectionals championships (2006 and 2008) as well as a regional title in 2006.

"I am very excited," said Maesch, whose Lakers went 19-6 this season including winning the Greene County Daily World Invitational for the first time in 26 seasons. "I feel a little bit rejuvenated.

"I had no intention of leaving Shakamak. I knew the job was open. When home comes calling and they say all the right things, it is kind of hard to turn down."

Maesch's Lakers were Tri-River Conference champions in 2006 and were TRC co-champs this year. His teams were 21-14 in Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference games and 19-6 in the TRC.

He said the timing was both right and wrong, in part because he had four sophomores returning from this year's squad that lost to Indianapolis Lutheran at the Class A Martinsville Regional.

"If I was ever going to make a move, I needed to do it now," said Maesch, who played college basketball at Indiana State University. "But it was not a good timing with the Shakamak situation.

"We have built things up to a high level and expect great things. When I talked to the kids the other day, I told them my expectations for them is to play for the biggest prize in the state and that should not change because I am leaving."

Maesch will take over for Mitch Lancaster, who stepped down as coach because of health problems.

Shakamak athletic director Brent Anderson said they will begin a search immediately to try and replace Maesch.

"Any time you lose a coach like Ernie, it is a big loss for us," said Anderson, whose wife LuAnne also was approved as the new girls basketball coach at Northview High School Thursday. "He has done very well in the time he has been here. It will be tough to replace him.

"We really haven't sat down and tried to iron out any time table for replacing Ernie. In the next couple of days, we will look at a time frame and begin setting up things for the application process. It is a tough loss for us, but I am excited that Ernie is getting to go home."

Maesch said he plans to meet with his team Monday and watch them perform in an open-gym situation Tuesday.

"I am leaving for a basketball clinic in Las Vegas on Wednesday," said Maesch. "I want to get a mentally image of the kids and have some time to think about what I have to work with before I leave.

"This is a great opportunity to build something at Northview. I am taking the road less traveled and am ready to step on the accelerator."

Part two of this story will appear in Saturday's Greene County Daily World.

Why would McBride ever leave such a prestigious program like Bloomfield? He has always coached here, always will.

Coach McBride is the way to go in my opinion...hasn't been a better coach in greene county over the past decade. His teams always find a way to compete, regardless of talent.

well eventhough i have a thick wrestling back ground I did coach basketball for a couple years, maybe I should through my name in the hat too!! lol

Bring in McBride or Hart. Maybe they would do some good with this team, not that Ernie didn't...because he did. I have heard names that are just totally off the wall. Does a the new coach required to have a teaching liscense??? or not??? That is something to think about. I knew this topic would heat up, boy was I right.....looking forward to see what's posted next.

It's comments like those, Laker dad, that make people not want to come to SHS. It's sad to think that Shakamak might miss out on another good coach because of the parents' reputations.

Jon Miller resigned as girls varsity coach and word is he's wanting the head boys job. Rumor is the school wants to fill the position within.

Oh, heck; give McBride another chance. I think the last time the opening was for an assistant principal and AD. Let him coach 'em this time.

McBride had his chance to come to Shakamak a few years back. We weren't good enough for him then. Leave him were he is this time.

Say what you will. Ernie had alot of success at Shakamak. He will be missed. Hopefully the next Shakamak coach will not be scrutinized like Ernie was. Good luck coach Maesch and Northveiw

The way things are going with the Bloomfield AD, McBride needs to throw a wrench in the whole thing and jump on this!

who ever the new coach is they need to hire a very head strong coach that wont get wrapped up in the soap opera with the parents

hopefully they can play together and the kids can have FUN.

Lets get it started. What names are we hearing to replace him? You have to think it would be a coveted job with the players they have, but on the other hand, people might shy away because of the baggage those players bring (not the kids fault).

So who? I hear names like John Bucher, Steve Brett, Max Deans son and Brody Boyd. Or maybe they promote their JV coach and give him a shot.

What about Ron McBride? A Shakamak Alum. Would he like a shot at a state title? I doubt that would work with the parents they have over there. I think they would rather have their sons score 30 a piece and lose than score 18 a piece and win as a team. Plus how many established coaches are going to sell the farm for a chance to win for 2 years.

It will be interesting to see. It will probably be someone that none of us see coming.

Best of luck to Coach Maesch. He did a great job with the Lakers.

Coach Maesch will be extremly hard to replace and Northview is in good hands. As a former player, it is sad to see Coach go but I wish him the best at Northview.

You cannot blame Ernie for wanting to go back home and coach. Like he said, "When home comes calling and they say all the right things, it is kind of hard to turn down."

Everyone should wish him the best of luck and remember what he has done for the program.

Way to go Ernie, good luck at Northview.

O boy, I can just hear the comments coming now!

Seriously, Best of Luck to him.
