Shawnee to host auditions

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Aspiring actors and musicians take note -- on Sunday afternoon, Shawnee Theatre will host local auditions at the theatre in Bloomfield for its upcoming season.

From 2-4 p.m., Producing Artistic Director Matt Graber will be looking for local talent to round out the 2008 company.

"We have actors from New York to Los Angeles coming to Shawnee this summer, but we still have some parts to fill," said Graber.

After a record-setting season last year, Graber is looking forward to Shawnee's 49th season.

"Mike Price is coming to be with us all season. Many of our regular patrons will remember him from past performances. We're really excited to have him back," said Graber.

The season will kick off June 12 with "Godspell," a musical extravaganza of Biblical proportions. Next comes Neil Simon's hit comedy "Barefoot In The Park" followed by "The Diviners" by James Leonard, Jr.

Shawnee's fourth production of the season will be "My Way, A Musical Tribute To Frank Sinatra," a musical review featuring more than 50 songs recorded by "Old Blue Eyes."

A romantic comedy "Almost, Maine" by John Cariani rounds out the fifth spot and the finale will be a world premier adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula" by Alan Shepard.

In addition to Sunday's auditions at the Theatre, interested persons may also audition in Bloomington on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Bloomington Playwrights Project, 107 W. 9th St. in Bloomington or April 5 from 3- 5 p.m. at the Phoenix Theatre, 749 N. Park Ave. in Indianapolis.

Graber says there are several spots available for actors. To audition, actors should have 16 bars of a song prepared as well as a 1-2 minute monologue. Bring a copy of your headshot and resume to the audition as well. Technicians should bring a copy of a resume and a list of references.

Local musician Kade Puckett of Linton will be performing in one production and Graber said he is still looking for a bass player and a drummer to form an ensemble with Puckett.

Also needed are singers for the choir in "Godspell." Graber said choral experience would be appreciated but it's not necessary.

"We're going to fill the theatre with sound in 'Godspell' so we'll be needing a number of people who can sing. Just come to an audition and show me you can carry a tune," said Graber.

If anyone is interested in performing, Graber says it never hurts to audition and he looks forward to finding local talent.

"I'd love to foster young talent. I'd also love to foster old talent that's undiscovered," said Graber.

Shawnee is also looking for costume folks to assist the designers.

Shawnee Theatre, Indiana's oldest continuously running summer theatre, is located just a mile south of downtown Bloomfield at 4 Furnace Road.
