Bloomfield Board makes summer school decisions

Monday, March 24, 2008

Summer school, lockers and books were some of the business at hand during the recent Bloomfield School Board meeting.

Superintendent Dan Sichting explained, "Summer school was approved...We are offering the traditional summer school offered in the past."

Driver's Ed, along with language arts, math ISTEP remediation, band, health and elementary art will all be offered, he noted.

Start dates, times and transportation vary depending on the course.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of 174 new lockers for the D hallway in the Jr./Sr. High School.

During the meeting, Board President Eric Moody explained, "The current lockers used in the D hallway are 20 years old. The revenue to purchase the lockers comes from remaining funds of a construction loan obtained in 2006."

School maintenance personnel will remove and dispose of the current lockers, he noted. Efforts will be made to receive some sort of revenue from the scrap metal of the lockers.

Sichting added that the old lockers may be worth $200.

In a 5-1 vote, the board approved the school's health insurance carrier for the upcoming school year.

Board Member Marvin Helms voted against the plan.

This is a change in plans-- the school's current health care provider is Dunn and Associates.

Helms was concerned about the switch and a possible lack of coverage.

At one point Helms said, "What I see us doing is exactly what we didn't want to do."

Sichting reassured board members that the company has a lot of coverage.

Northeast and Southwest Sullivan School Corporations both have ISTA, he added. The only problem is Southern Indiana Radiologists Association is not a part of this coverage.

Sichting also said the new plan includes a two-tier deductible.

"It is costing a little bit more in rates but they (ISTA) still were cheaper," Sichting added.

It gives young employees the ability to choose a higher deductible and put more money in their pocket from wages, he added.

Board Member Keith Hanauer added, "It's nice to give them the option..."

An update on progress of the tornado damage repair was also provided by Sichting.

Repairs to the bus barn were recently completed, he said. In terms of dollars, the bus barn received the most damage during the storm.

"We have the playground equipment on site and we'll begin replacing that...," Sichting added.

The fence is up and the windows will soon be installed.

"The roof needs patched...it has a temporary patch now," he added, noting small odds and ends still need repaired.

In other business the board:

* Adopted the 2008-08 school calendar.

* Adopted elementary reading books.

* Adopted Jr./Sr. High English books.

* Amended and approved the non-certified employee handbook.
