"Supporting Heroes" has and hopes that you will join the cause by attending a local fundraiser March 30.
Supporting Heroes provides support to families of police, fire, and EMS personnel killed in the line of duty.
Local member and Lewis Township firefighter Diane Harrison explained, "Supporting Heroes covers all line of duty deaths in Indiana and Kentucky. ... This is our first fundraiser but I hope to make it annual."
The all-you-can-eat fundraiser will be from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on March 30 at the Lewis Township Fire Department in Coalmont. On the menu is spaghetti, salad, desserts and drinks. Adult tickets are $6. Tickets for children under 10 are $3.
"Please come and support the organization that supports us," Harrison said. "We all know it's not if, it's when, where and who."
In 2007, 20 families were affected by a line of duty death, she noted.
"At the time of the (line of duty) death, they (Supporting Heroes) immediately come with a $3,000 check," Harrison explained. "Many families are two-income families. So, not only are you losing a family member but you are also losing income."
The organization also helped with funeral arrangements, she noted.
"After about a month they come back and sit down with the family tally up house bills, credit card bills ... whatever they have ... and send them a monthly payment until the public safety officer's benefit comes in. Sometimes that's a year," Harrison said.
But even after the death, the organization still offers support.
"They have a survivor-to-survivor network. They have put in security systems in houses. Anything to help them feel comfortable. Fortunately, it hasn't happened real close to your area," she added. "Last month in Mooresville a firefighter was lost."
