Police looking for man who failed to register

Thursday, March 20, 2008

The charge of failure to register as a sex offender was filed and a warrant in the works this week for a man who had been living in Linton.

David Pete Dove was convicted of criminal deviate conduct in Greene Superior Court on Aug. 25, 2003. This conviction requires him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life in any county he moves to, moves from or works in.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Monday, on Dec. 18, 2007, Dove registered as a sex offender living in Greene County at 410 S. Main St. in Linton. The residence at that address is owned by Dove's father who told Greene County Sheriff's Det. George Dallaire that Dove had been living with him since he got out of prison.

Dallaire wrote in the affidavit that it was suspected Dove had recently moved from this residence because he had two outstanding arrest warrants.

One warrant was from Knox County for a probation violation in connection with an initial charge of resisting law enforcement.

The other warrant was from Greene County for a petition to revoke probation in connection with the criminal deviate conduct conviction.

During the investigation, Dallaire was told that Dove had moved to Bicknell with his girlfriend who has two teenage children.

In the 2003 conviction in Greene Superior Court, Dove, who was 44 at the time, was sentenced to 16 years in prison after entering a plea of guilty to one count of criminal deviate conduct, a class B felony, as part of a negotiated plea agreement. As part of the agreement, five counts of rape were dismissed.

Dove was ordered to serve the time in the Indiana Department of Corrections, with nine of the 16 years suspended. He was to then be on probation for nine years. He was ordered to pay a $100 fine plus court costs and not have contact with any of the victims involved.

The case began May 25, 2001 when Dove was charged with rape and criminal deviate. He was arrested and released from jail after posting 10 percent of his $30,000 bond. However, more victims came forward and Dove was arrested again on May 31, 2001 by Linton Police Officers Chad Crynes and Duane Collenbaugh after LPD Det. Sgt. Troy Jerrell (now LPD Police Chief) filed three more counts of rape against Dove involving three more women.

On July 10, 2001, the fifth count of rape was added to the list of charges.

Failure to register as a sex offender is a class D felony.

The warrant for this latest charge was expected to be issued Thursday morning.

According to the affidavit, Dove may be living in Bicknell. The Greene County Sheriff's Department has contacted the Knox County Sheriff's Department and the Bicknell Police Department and requested they be on the lookout for Dove.
