One horse killed, another wounded near Linton

Submitted photo INJURED HORSE: Ken and Karen Diehl's horse "Tigger" is one of two of their eight horses found shot Monday near County Roads 1250 West and 545 North in western Greene County. Tigger, who was shot with a deer rifle, is expected to recover.

Oreo is dead.

A beautiful black horse with a bright white blaze on its nose, Oreo was shot with a .22 caliber gun and found lifeless in a Greene County pasture Monday.

Oreo was one of two horses shot on the same property. The other horse, Tigger, was shot with a deer rifle but is expected to recover.

Oreo and Tigger's owners, Ken and Karen Diehl, live in a heavily wooded area on a Linton rural route and had eight horses. Now they have seven.

"It's deer season and we've heard shooting all week," said Ken. "Around dark, I started looking for the horses, went down past the creek and over to the other field and found Oreo dead. I led one of the others back up to the corral area and the rest followed. Once we got up to the corral, I saw that Tigger had been shot too."

The Diehls called their veterinarian and the Greene County Sheriff's Department and both arrived about the same time.

"The vet looked at Oreo and told us it was a .22," said Diehl. "He wasn't able to tell us if the horse had been shot right there or if he might have been shot somewhere else and just dropped there."

The call record at the Greene County Sheriff's Department is a report of shots fired near C.R. 1250 West and C.R. 545 North. A report is not available yet but the case is being investigated by Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Leon Dunigan.

For now, the Diehls are left to speculate about what happened to their horses. They could have been shot accidentally by hunters, but two horses, one black and one red, by two different guns does not sound like an accident.

Lana Robertson, president of the Greene County Humane Society and member of the Greene County Horse Council, says it's been a long time since she's heard of any horses being accidentally shot.

If this were an accident, Robertson wondered why the hunters did not contact the owners rather than just leaving. If this was done on purpose, Robertson said she hopes the people are found and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"I would strongly advise hunters to take every care and precaution they can to make sure they know what they're shooting at before they raise that gun," said Robertson.

Oreo was a Haflinger, a breed of horse that looks like a small Belgian horse. They're about 54-56 inches tall, shorter than most horses but they have a stocky build.

Tigger, who is a reddish half-Haflinger and half-quarter horse, is now recuperating inside the Diehl barn.

"The vet thinks he's going to be OK, as long as there's no infection," said Ken. "We're lucky it's not fly season. He's had penicillin and tetanus shots and we're using a special cleaning solution and a salve on his wound."

The rest of the Diehl horses are going to be staying in the corral by the barn for the rest of hunting season.

Robertson says that would be a wise precaution for all horse owners to take at this time of year.

"I advise people to keep their horses up near the barn or even inside the barn during hunting season," said Robertson. "I've even known of people who splashed white or orange paint on their horses if they're in an area that's heavily hunted."

One thing is for sure is that this was not a hunting accident. Probably either someone with a grudge against the Diehls or a poacher who mistook the animals for deer in the dark. Either way I hope they catch and hang the @#$%(*^s

America,

Now those are fightin' words!

Whoever shot this horse is NOT, I repeat, NOT a hunter! Hunters are conservationists who are responsible for many, if not most, of the abundant wildlife you may enjoy viewing. How can that be, you ask? The Pittman-Robertson Act. This law was proposed by hunters, instituting a tax on items that they use in their sport, so that wildlife and habitat can be reintroduced, protected and enjoyed by all. A true hunter is responsible and cautious at all times. A true hunter properly identifies his/her prey before they attempt to harvest the animal. A true hunter abides by the law and notifies the proper law enforcement authorities of fish and game violations committed by others.

The person you are speaking of is called a poacher. They are not hunters! Please don't lump these idiots in with people of all ages and walks of life who enjoy the sport of hunting!

Guns do not kill people...people kill people!

With a name like "america" you should be ashamed to even suggest such things!

There is no sense to ban hunting. The horses that were injured are my Aunt Karen's horses. I send my dearest sympathy because loosing a pet is sometimes very hard. It is a sad shame that someone would shoot and kill horses. I don't believe that this was an accident for the simple fact they killed one horse and injured another horse. The law states that you can't hunt after dusk. I hope that the people that committed these crimes are put away. It isn't going to replace my aunt's horses but it could stop other horses from being injured.

There is no reason to ban hunting over the stupid things that others do. My thoughts go out to the people that lost the horse. There are always people out there that do not want to abide by the laws no matter what they are. This was no accident. If it would have been a legal deer hunter it would have been shot with a slug, not a .22. There is no one allowed to use a .22 while deer hunting. These people will be caught sooner or later. Because they wont be able to keep their mouth shut for long.

I too deer hunted in the past and I know that you are to make sure what your target is before you shoot. So does any young child since they have to go through hunters education classes before they can get a hunting license. These people are not hunters they are poachers.

I do not think you can Deer hunt with a rifle -- but you cannot do a lot of wrongful things that are done either with a gun. I do support carring guns. I do. No need to jump on the band wagon about banning guns,,, geee whizzz -- when guns are not legal - guess who carries a gun???

Whats with all the ban talking? Nazis take over Greene County while I slept? Ban Smoking, coffee, hunting. Mabye we should just hide in our houses as military patrols our streets, and not be allowed to speak out about it for fear of punishment.

I am not blaming Deer Hunters for the death of one horse and hurting the other horse, I don't think this was done on accident this was done on purpose. I am also a deer hunter, and I don't think they ought to ban guns, because the idots that hurt my horses will get by with more than they have now. But they will get there justice, it may just take time, but they will get caught. And I want to THANK everyone for there support and help, If anyone hears anything about who done this to my horses PLEASE tell the Sheriff. That's one way to help me catch the idoit that done this, may help you to SAVE your Horses too! Many Thanks to All of YOU! And all the support and caring! And to let you know Tigger is doing fine and recoving good, Still can't bend his head down to eat or drink we have things up where he can reach the food and water and hay. Thanks Again The owners of the shot horses!!

To whatithink...

To say that guns kill people is like saying cars cause all the motor vehicle deaths (over 100,000) in the United States when 99% percent are caused by driver error.

People who have the will and intent to do harm will do so with or without guns or other weapons. You seem to forget that "guns" have won and keep winning our freedom everyday so that we may live free! You wouldn't have the freedom to state your opinion on this blog if it were not for the role firearms have played in our fight for freedom.

I am not saying to ban guns, I just want justice for the death and injury to the Horses I have lost and taking care of the other one. I have passion for the Horses and some people, that have respect for others, not for people that kill other peoples animals or things. I am not saying BAN GUNS!
