He was born April 15, 1924, in Pleasantville, the son of John & Naomi (Vincent) Steele. Paul was the grandson of Rowan Steele, a courier for General Robert E. Lee and a witness to the signing of the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Courthouse.
He was a 1943 graduate of Linton High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. During WW II, he served on a submarine chaser and participated in the invasions of the Marshall Islands and the Mariana Islands. After military service, he attended Indiana University, earning his B.S. & M.S. degrees. For 28 years, he taught history and social studies and also coached a variety of sports, including basketball, baseball, and football at Linton and Dugger. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 22 of Linton.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Carolyn L. (Shilkett) Steele of Linton, a son, Kyle Steele & his wife, Heather, of Atlanta, Georgia, and two grandchildren, Hannah and Rowan Steele of Atlanta, GA.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie, five brothers, John, Robert, Benjamin, William and James and his parents.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m . Friday at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home Linton Chapel with Jack Greenwood officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton. The Linton American Legion will conduct military graveside rites.
