James W. Poynter, 57, of Larado, Texas and formerly from Indiana, died Jan. 31, 2004 at the Doctors Hospital in Larado.

Born Jan. 5, 1947, in Bobtown, Ky., he was the son of Alonzo and Maggie Poynter Burnett.

He was a longtime truck driver and mechanic. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Survivors include his mother of Shortcreek, Ky.; one son, Caleb and one daughter Aliza, both of California; three brothers, Rick and Dale Poynter, both of Linton, and Gary Poynter of Eubank, Ky.; one sister, Sue Carlton of Shortcreek, Ky.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Partricia Poynter.

Service will be 10 a.m. on Saturday at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Somerset, Ky.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
