Born April 9, 1927 in Sullivan County, he was the son of Glessa and Dessie (Shepler) Overton.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Terre Haute Krietenstein American Legion Post 104 and Terre Haute VFW Post 972. He was an avid euchre player and enjoyed being with people.
Survivors include: his wife of 33 years, Helen Overton of West Terre Haute; a son Ernie Overton and his wife Joni of Indianapolis; two daughters, Brenda and her husband Homer Brewer of West Terre Haute, and Robin and her husband Raleigh Sherman of West Terre Haute; a step-daughter Marsha and her husband Bob Taylor of Lakeland, Fla.; a step-son Danny Myers and his wife Ellen of Winter Springs, Fla.; a sister Clara Clayton Wells of Terre Haute; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Virgil and Eugene Overton, and one great-grandchild Kaylie Johnson.
Military graveside service will be by VFW Post 972 at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Woodward Cemetery.
Friends may call at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger on Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
