Born in Dugger, he was the son of William and Mammie (Lynk) Howell.
He was a 1930 graduate of Union High School and was employed as a manufacturing engineer. He was also employed by Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, where he taught math and engineering and helped to start a work-study program. He was a member of Vox United Methodist Church, The Villa Park II, Masonic Lodge and Johnsonville Lion's Club.
Surviving are a son, Harold Howell; a daughter, Patricia Wohrley, of Americus, Ga.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
A funeral service and burial was held in Hemingway, S.C.
