Born in Demotte, he was the son of Alice (Van Meerten) Steiner.
He was a retired truck driver. He was raised Methodist and attended the First Baptist Church in Jasonville.
Survivors include: his wife, Velma Jean (Anderson) Van Meerten of Jasonville; a daughter, Debbie Lynn Harmon of Franklin; two sons, James Van Meerten of Jasonville and Wayne Van Meerten of Fordsville, Ky.; one brother, Robert Van Meerten of Wheatfield; nine grandchildren, Richie Harmon, Robbie Harmon, Becky Arnold, Karen Van Meerten, Mandy Van Meerten, Brandy Van Meerten and Tanya Van Meerten; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Phillip Lee Van Meerten; and grandson, Scotty Lee Sluder.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at McClanahan-Lee Funeral Home in Jasonville with Pastor Ron Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery at Midland.
Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
