John Elmer Charlton, 93, of Carlisle, passed away at 9:46 p.m. Monday, May 7 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes.

Born Dec. 26, 1913 in Knox County, he was the son of Don R. and Ethel Whitlock Charlton.

He was a member of the Morris Chapel United Methodist Church near Oaktown.

Survivors include: two sons, Jack Charlton, of Lakeland, Fla., and Dale Charlton of Memphis, Tenn.; a step-son Donny Sparks of Linton; a step-daughter, Marge Anderson of Linton; three grandchilden; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Sparks Charlton in 2007; and two sisters.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Newkirk's Funeral Home in Dugger with the Rev. Robert Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) and before the service Thursday.
