It's trash, treasure time in Worthington

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

WORTHINGTON -- Saturday is yard sale day in Worthington.

For one day a year, this quiet, peaceful town becomes a mecca for shoppers hunting for trash and treasures at sales set up all over town.

This is the 16th year residents have geared up for the "Around the Town" Yard Sale Day, always held on the Saturday before Labor Day. The day is sponsored by the Worthington Lions Club.

Started in 1992 by Jean Ingersoll and Lessalee Pickard, who have both passed away, it is one of the largest and most successful community yard sale events in the state.

The day starts at 6:30 a.m. when the Lions Club starts serving breakfast in the Town Hall of the Municipal Building, located on State Road 67 downtown on the Triangle. Lions Club President Glen Cundiff said they'll be open until 10 a.m. and will charge $4 for adults or $2 for children. The menu includes pancakes and sausage, biscuits and gravy, milk, juice and coffee.

Locations of sales change every year. Although a few residents set up a sale every year, others have a sale every few years. Since out-of-town friends and family members frequently come to set up alongside those having a sale, any one location may be a multiple-family sale or have several small sales set up on one property.

To find your way around town, maps will be available, courtesy of the Lions Club. The map will list the sale locations and help shoppers find their way through the streets. Participants who want to be included on the map must submit their location one week before sale day. Those who do not meet the deadline can still set up -- they just won't be on the map. So the map contains most, but not all, of the sales, food vendors, and the necessary convenience stations.

Provo Septic Service, a Worthington business, will set up numerous porta-potties around town for the convenience of shoppers. Some of these will be handicap-accessible. Locations will be noted on the map.

For a couple of days prior to sale day, the map may be picked up in advance at various businesses in Worthington and at Town Hall in the Municipal Building.

On sale day, the Lions Club will have a central information table set up on the northeast corner of Main and Edwards Streets. This will be the place to get a map and a free drink of water.

In addition to the Lions Club breakfast, numerous food vendors will set up around town including a hamburger and hot dog sidewalk stand in front of the Masonic Lodge downtown. There will be pulled pork sandwiches on North Lafayette Street and ribeyes on North Jefferson. Johnny Davidson will set up a fish stand, and on the corner of Main and Jefferson, a home-ec club will offer homemade apple dumplings with ice cream.

To pay for advertising and other costs of the event, the Lions Club asks each seller to make a donation. Throughout the day, members of the Worthington-Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department volunteer their time to make the rounds to each sale and request these donations with all profits share equally between the WJVFD and the Lions Club.

The Worthington Lions Club supports several local charities and programs including the Sonshine Shop & Food Pantry. They provide free optometry exams and glasses for local children in need and award a $500 scholarship each year. They also contribute to cancer programs and the leader dog program.

So far, Worthington's yard sale day has never been rained out.
