Two major Worthington projects are delayed again

Tuesday, August 14, 2007

WORTHINGTON -- The announcements of delays on two big projects were met with resigned silence at the Worthington Town Council meeting on Tuesday evening.

On the long-awaited Worthington Downtown Redevelopment Project, Council President Hal Harp said the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) had notified the town that the contract can't be bid until December.

"They delayed it again," said Harp.

And on the Williams House asbestos removal project, Harp said the paperwork from the contractor has not been received as expected.

"It's probably going to have to be re-bid," he speculated.

In regular business, Town Marshal Dennis Conaway reported on police department activity and a recent fund-raising dinner organized by the WPD, hosted at the VFW. Conaway said $550 was raised to benefit the town's Senior Citizen Center. He also asked about progress getting a light up over the new skateboarding area in the Worthington Park.

Harp answered that an appointment to arrange the installation will take place on Sept. 11.

Fire Chief Jeff Stahl reported on fire department activity and noted that July had been a quiet month for the WJVFD.

Harp announced the town's proposed budget for the year 2008 was published for the second time (as required by law) in the Greene County Daily World on Tuesday. The next step in the process will be a public hearing which will be held on at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28 in the Town Hall.Following the hearing, the budget can be approved at a special session scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1. In addition to reading the budget in the paper, Harp said the budget is also available in the clerk's office. "If anyone wants a copy, they're allowed to get one," said Harp. "It's a matter of public record."

Under new business, Marshal Conaway talked to the Council about the speed limit signs in the town. He said he would like to see a change to newer-style bright, florescent signs. They are more expensive, so Conaway suggested signs could be replaced in one section of town at a time rather than all at once. In preparation for a future decision, Harp said, "Let's get some prices for speed signs."

In other business, complaints from the resident Jane Arthur were aired about a town employee, and about golf carts. In the first, Councilmember Macky Stahl acknowledged the Council had listened to the complaint.

Regarding golf carts, Marshal Conaway stated, "There is no statute in Indiana law on golf carts."
